One game that fans have not been able to stop talking about during this time of being quarantined has been the highly anticipated next installment in the AC franchise, Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla. Set during the Age of Vikings in the 9th century, one thing fans are eager to see is if any Norse mythological creatures will be featured.

While this game is sure to follow more historical paths than mythological ones, many Viking beliefs tell tales of mythological creatures, and since Odyssey featured many Greek creatures, many want to know. So here are five mythological creatures fans want to see, (and five they don’t).

10 (Don’t Want) Elf

One creature who is not likely to appear in the game world is none other than elves. Interestingly enough, the elves have a prominent place amongst the gods of Norse mythology, often appearing angelic and beautiful as the gods often do to humans.

They are known to cause illness and heal humans on Earth, and life in the realm of Alfheim. With their ties to magic, it is far more unlikely that they will appear in the more grounded entry into the AC series.

9 (Want) Ymir

If the game takes the time to explore the full origins of the Norse people’s mythology, one important creature that needs to be featured is Ymir, the first creature to come into being. A giant that is both male and female, Ymir gave birth to several other beings, including Bor, the father of Odin.

Odin and his brothers Vili and Ve slew Ymir and used his body to fashion the entire cosmos, including Earth. This could be featured in the origins that the Vikings believed they came from.

8 (Don’t Want) Sleipnir

One creature that is not likely to be featured is the eight-legged horse that Odin rode throughout the cosmos, named Sleipnir. The creature was one of the several shamanistic entities who served Odin on his journey through the nine worlds, all attached to the world tree Yggdrasil.

The horse is integral to Odin’s isolated journey throughout the worlds, and thus for the purposes of the AC storyline, it wouldn’t really make sense to appear. The mare doesn’t add much to the plot overall.

7 (Want) Jörmungandr

One creature that could easily be adapted for the storyline featured in the upcoming game is Jormungand, aka the Midgard Serpent. One of the three children of Loki the god of mischief, the serpent is the fated enemy of Asgard’s own Thor, the son of Odin and protector of the realms.

The two are fated to take out one another in a climactic battle. The serpent could easily be featured as a sign or vision in the game to represent the Templars or could be shown as a large snake that is misinterpreted as the Midgard Serpent.

6 (Don’t Want) Ratatoskr

One central pillar of the Norse mythology is the World Tree, Yggdrasil. There are said to be numerous animals that live on the World Tree, from a dragon at the tree’s base to an eagle at the tree’s top. One creature who lives to run insults and messages between these two animals on the World Tree is Ratatoskr, a squirrel.

To be honest, featuring this squirrel creature and the World Tree as a whole doesn’t make sense with the grounded approach Ubisoft is claiming to have taken with this game, making its appearance unlikely.

5 (Want) Kraken

One creature that is known across many different cultures, including Norse mythology, that would serve well in the game world is the legendary Kraken. A frequent predator in the Norway and Greenland areas, the creatures often attacked sailors and was described as a giant octopus-like being.

What makes this creature more hopeful than others is two-fold. The first being that giant octopus and squid have been reported to have been spotted, so there may be a real occasion to see the creature. The second being sea-travel is crucial to the upcoming game, making it more likely to appear than others.

4 (Don’t Want) Mare

One creature not likely to find a place in the upcoming video game is the Mare. Not to be confused with the horses ridden by the Vikings of the time, the Mare is a demonic entity in Norse mythology, most associated with nightmares.

The creature was known to sit on the chests of its victims, inducing a series of nightmares and even was known to tangle the branches of trees. They were often seen as a sign of foreboding.

3 (Want) Fenrir

Wolves are a pivotal creature and animal in Norse mythology and culture. The most famous of them all and the most powerful of the Viking belief system is the son of Loki, Fenrir. The wolf is a giant, and the brother of both Hel and the Midgard Serpent.

Fenrir was so powerful that they had to chain up the large beast to protect the nine worlds, as it grew at an alarming pace. Building powerful chains using dwarves, the beast was locked up by Tyr, who lost his arm in the process. It would be simple to see wolves playing into the game’s plot.

2 (Don’t Want) Dwarf

The creatures least likely to appear in the game have to be the dwarves. Creatures who don’t necessarily appear to be in small stature despite pop culture’s influence over the years, these creatures live on Svartalfheim and are renowned for being the most powerful and talented blacksmiths and craftsman in the nine worlds.

While blacksmiths and weaponry are sure to play into the game, the utilization of dwarves other than perhaps mentioning the creatures in passing is not likely to occur.

1 (Want) Valkyries

The entity most likely to appear in the game world due to their connection to Valhalla itself is the Valkyrie. These entities are unique in that they are often portrayed positively in modern understandings of the mythology, but during the “heathen” times they had far more sinister approaches.

While most portray the Valkyries as maidens who transport the slain heroes to Valhalla to fight by Odin’s side during Ragnarok, earlier depictions show they also chose who would perish on the battlefield and cause harm, making these creatures more complex and essential to the core of the game.
