For months now, Nvidia has touted its RTX 3000 series as the biggest generational leap in GPU history. And if the newly announced laptops are anything to go by, there truly has never been a better time to be a PC gamer on the go.
The company’s most recent product reveals came during Nvidia’s "Game On" event at CES 2021, where it finally detailed what the initial laptop offering will be, pairing up with manufacturers to bring capable ray tracing technology and cutting edge performance that potentially exceeds what’s currently being put out by the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X, thanks to the RTX 3060, 3070 and 3080 graphics cards.
This new generation Ampere GPU-powered gaming laptops will come with a starting price point of $999 for the newly announced RTX 3060 notebooks, which replace the previous 2060 models and are targeting 1080p gaming up to 90fps when running at the highest setting for current games. The RTX 3060 is a newly announced product after Nvidia already launched the 3060 Ti desktop variant in December, with the non-Ti version sporting 12GB of GDDR6 memory, which is oddly more video memory than all the desktop 3000 series cards, except for the costly RTX 3090.
Going up from that, the RTX 3070 laptops will be geared towards 1440p gaming and higher quality displays. Starting from $1,299, the flagship laptop graphics cards will be targeting uncompromised +100fps performance at 1440p for a starting price of $1,999. In the latter’s case, the video memory specs are detailed to be “up to 16GB GDDR6,” perhaps hinting that there will be different variants of this particular card.
Nvidia’s video memory specs for their mobile lineup definitely differ greatly from the desktop models of the RTX 3000 series and one of the reasons could be the implementation of their “Dynamic Boost 2.0” tech, which aims to manage GPU, CPU and VRAM resources more efficiently in order to achieve a more balanced performance output to power consumption, after all these are still laptops.
The new RTX 3000 laptops will officially launch on January 26 with some pre-orders already being available on some manufacturers and stores’ websites. Considering how the desktop launches went and future price hikes in Nvidia products, those looking to get a new portable gaming beast should probably start looking for their top picks before all these promising laptops completely vanish from stock.
