After taking some time to settle our adrenaline levels on the back of playing The Medium, last-gen players can now visit the sci-fi-themed Observer: System Redux. The horror-based studio Bloober Team recently announced that the enhanced version of its cyberpunk hit would be debuting on PS4 and Xbox One platforms on July 16 - another reason to experience the talents of the late Rutger Hauer.

System Redux offered a revamped version of the psychological horror last year, complete with new quests that were integrated into the main narrative. Fans of the studio’s work were blessed with the news that The Medium and System Redux would be receiving physical copies this year, and System Redux’s release has kicked off proceedings. A physical copy on PS5 and PC will also release in July, and now last-gen owners can experience some of the magic from the enhancement.

Bloober Team released a short trailer to announce the release date of the digital and physical copies of the game, featuring a montage of clips as well as accolade ratings. The montage harnesses the cyberpunk aesthetic of System Redux, where Krakowian detective Daniel Lazarski (played by Hauer) uses his Dream Eater technology to hack people’s brains during investigations. The Blade Runner-inspired narrative and setting gained Hauer’s performance to build something of an unofficial testament to the film, while also creating its own world integrated with advanced technology.

At the start of the year, the Polish developer released a video outlining nine “uncanny” facts about its horror game The Medium, and one of those facts suggested that The Medium and Observer existed within the same universe. It was revealed that the apartment belonging to The Medium’s protagonist also appeared in Observer, with the apartment being based on a real building near Matejko Square in Kraków, Poland.

Our four-and-a-half star review of Observer: System Redux boasted its flawless art direction with stunning visuals, as well as its polished finish and accessibility options. Our only criticisms were its unnecessary stealth sections and an event that should have had a trigger warning attached. The world building in System Redux also has us excited for Bloober Team’s “new big project”, which is currently in development.
