God of War director Eric Williams has revealed that Richard Schiff only agreed to play Odin in the game after his son told him to "just say yes" to the role.

One of the biggest things that God of War Ragnarok does in terms of its story is introducing the All-Father, Odin. The 2018 game mentioned him several times throughout the adventure but never went as far as showing him, while Ragnarok places him as one of the most important characters. This importance is carried by Emmy winner Richard Schiff, who is best known for playing Toby Ziegler on The West Wing.

In a recent interview with Sports Illustrated, God of War Ragnarok director Eric Williams spoke about how the team managed to get Schiff for the role, despite not expecting him to take it. As it turns out, Schiff's son is a massive fan of the series and pushed him to take the role, despite Schiff having no idea what God of War was.

Williams said, “He didn’t know what it was when we made the call to him. And then his son’s like, ‘What do they want you to do?’ And he goes, ‘Oh, they want me to be in God of War.’ He was like, ‘Do it, Dad!’ His son was a huge fan and he broke down God of War 2018. He wrote down all these highlight notes on two pages so his dad knew how to talk to us about everything. Who does that? He’s Richard Schiff. He could just show up!”

The topic of Schiff taking on the role of Odin was also mentioned by Williams in an interview with Game Informer, where he spoke about the reaction from the team at Sony Santa Monica. According to Williams, "They were like, 'That guy's going to play Odin!? You're sh****** me!' And some people were like, “I don't know about this,” And then he opened his mouth and everybody was like, Dude, this is going to be amazing".
