Earlier this year, Capcom announced that the high definition remaster of the beloved PS2 game, Okami, would be coming to Nintendo Switch. Now, the official Okami Twitter account has confirmed its release date: August 9th.

eShop pre-orders however are not live yet. The Twitter account posted a correction two hours later, stating that pre-orders would be closer to the August release date.

Okami originally released on the PS2 in 2006. The game has been critically acclaimed, earning an impressive score of 93 on Metacritic. This puts it in the top 200 highest-rated games of all time on Metacritic. It was ported to the Wii two years later. Perhaps most importantly, it received a high definition remaster for the PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. Suspiciously missing was the Switch from that lineup. That changes in August, when Switch owners will be able to experience the artistic adventure for the first time, or relive it for on-the-go play.

Okami's story takes place in Japanese folklore. Players take control of the sun goddess Amaterasu, whom has taken the form of a white wolf. Okami Amaterasu is on a journey to acquire the "Celestial Brush," in order to stop monsters and defeat the evil Orochi, an 8-headed serpent. Back in March, a trailer for the Switch port was released. It looks like the Switch version will take advantage of the console's touchscreen. Also, motion control using the Joy-Cons will be possible.

Okami is certainly a stylish game. Its art style is unique and stands out from the crowd. Its presence on the Switch is welcome for many, and with the Switch being an immensely successful console, the game will gain more awareness. Who knows, maybe we will finally see a proper Okami 2. A sequel called Okamiden was released for the DS, but many are still waiting for a grander home console sequel.

Interestingly, it seems like Okami HD for Switch will only be available on the eShop. Back in its March announcement, Capcom stated that "Okami HD will be available digitally on Nintendo eShop for Nintendo Switch this summer." If it's digital only, that will be disappointing for those who wanted to own the lovely box art from the PS4 and Xbox One releases. Either way though, having Okami on Switch should prove to be a treat for many.
