Honor of Kings is one of the biggest games in the world. Developed by TiMi Studio Group and published by Tencent Games, the multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) game is hugely successful in its native China, with over 100 million daily active players.

Known as Arena of Valor in its international adaptation, Honor of Kings drives massive profits for Tencent. The Chinese tech company, which happens to be one of the largest games publishers in the world, has made over $10 billion in player spending since Honor of Kings launched in 2015. According to a report by mobile apps market research firm Sensor Tower, the title has made more than $2 billion of that total in 2021 alone, across the iOS and Android app stores.

To put that into perspective, the second-highest earner was Supercell's Brawl Stars, which generated over $320 million between January and August 2021, making it a distant runner-up in terms of money made.

Now, Tencent Games and TiMi Studio Group have announced Honor of Kings: World, a new title based on Honor of Kings. The new title will be an open-world action RPG and is planned for a worlwide launch on multiple platforms. The news came from Honor of King's official Weibo (China's Twitter-like platform), which has 14 million followers. A trailer for the game was posted alongside the details, but no release date was specified.

The post also announced a collaboration with famous Chinese sci-fi writer Liu Cixin (The Three-Body Problem) who is working on Honor Of King's series in general, but also a new IP. Liu Cixin will help the publisher to "explore new possibilities from the integration of science fiction literature and games, and together create a digitial cultural IP to the east," the announcement said.

The trailer for Honor of Kings: World shows a lush landscape that recalls Breath of the Wild but set in a semi-mythical world of Chinese palaces, mystical creatures, dragons, and anime-style warriors. With the worldwide success of Genshin Impact - another open-world action RPG - which is developed by Shanghai's miHoYo, Chinese-developed videogames are starting to gain more prominence on the international gaming scene.
