One Piece will be receiving a live-action adaptation in the future, and the person who is penning the script has been revealed.

The One Piece live-action series is being written by Matt Owens, whose previous credits include episodes of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Luke Cage, and The Defenders. The announcement of Owen's involvement in One Piece was made in the latest issue of Weekly Shonen Jump magazine.

According to the Anime News Network, Owens discussed his role in the project in Weekly Shonen Jump.

One Piece is my absolute favorite story in my life. It is my greatest honor to have the trust of Oda-sensei, Shueisha, and everyone at Tomorrow Studios to be appointed to this great role of adapting this magnificent and heart-pounding adventure into live-action. I want to display my great passion and make a story that is faithful and exciting, and will satisfy long-time fans and will also attract new fans.

Matt Owens has a pedigree of working on MCU shows, but that will likely do little to assuage the fears of the One Piece fanbase about the quality of the project. This is due to the fact that there have been a lot of terrible live-action adaptations of anime and manga released in the west in the past, including Dragonball Evolution, Death Note, and Ghost in the Shell. There are also many fans who still remember the changes made to the original English dub of One Piece that was made by 4Kids, as well as the infamous One Piece rap song that was in its intro.

The fantasy world of One Piece is going to be difficult to recreate in a live-action setting. There are so many bizarre aspects to the One Piece world that work in a cartoon or on a comic book page, but wouldn't look right when emulated by costumes and props. The bizarre proportions of the characters are just one of many problems that the producers will need to address, as well as the reality of depicting characters like Brook, Franky, and Tony Tony Chopper in live-action. The live-action version of One Piece is going to have to overcome a lot of hurdles in the adaptation process, and it will certainly be a lot more difficult to create than an MCU project that is grounded in a contemporary setting.

The One Piece live-action adaptation is currently in development.
