Fortnite has borrowed ideas from rival battle royale games in the past, so don't be surprised if it gets its very own version of the Gulag in the future.
Call of Duty: Warzone has waded into the battle royale scene in a major way. It has also looked at some of the norms stuck to by others in the genre and said "no thanks". The traditional 100 players per match, for example. 150 players compete in every round of Warzone, and Infinity Ward has already revealed that will eventually be increased to 200.
Warzone has also put its own spin on what exactly death means for a player. Unlike some other battle royale games, if a player is struck down early on, it's not necessarily a case of loading up another round and trying again. Players get a chance to re-enter the fray via something called the Gulag. A one-on-one scenario between two fallen players, the winner of which gets a second chance.
Not only does the Gulag allow less-skilled players a potential second chance, but it also prolongs rounds, and lessens the chance of a player's round lasting a matter of seconds. As far as we can tell, it's a universally loved feature by Warzone players. So loved, in fact, that it's probably only a matter of time before Epic Games' take on the Gulag shows up in Fortnite.
Battle royale is an evolving genre, and even though Fortnite is still the industry leader, Epic takes note when a rival improves on the BR formula. When Apex Legends entered the fray, it brought with it a far more specific and developed ping system, as well as the ability to revive fallen teammates. Shortly after Apex's release, and we mean very shortly after, tweaked versions of both of those things appeared in Fortnite.
That's why it seems highly likely a Fortnite Gulag will be added to the game some time soon. It's the only feature Warzone has added to the battle royale arena that Fortnite can really steal. Epic will have to tweak it a fair bit, though. Two players fighting to the death inside a prison while others watch on seems a little violent for Fortnite. Then again, as cartoonish as Fortnite might be, it is still a game where 100 people try to kill each other until there is only one.
