The nominees for all 23 categories of the 2021 Academy Awards have been announced following one of the strangest years in movie history.

The last year's movie slate might have been sparse, but that won't stop 2021's Academy awards from going ahead. The ceremony will take place live on Sunday, April 25, 2021, and this morning, nominees for all 23 categories were announced. Nick Jonas and Priyanka Chopra revealed the nominees during a live stream this morning which you can check out in full below.

The nominees for Best Picture, the holy grail of all the awards up for grabs, include The Father, Judas and the Black Messiah, Mank, Minari, Nomadland, Promising Young Woman, Sound of Metal, and The Trial of the Chicago 7. Elsewhere, Chadwick Boseman, who passed away last August, has received a posthumous best actor nomination for his role in Ma Rainey's Black Bottom.

One of the most unexpected appearances in the list of nominees goes to Borat Subsequent Moviefilm. The sequel hit Amazon Prime in 2020 and is up for two Academy Awards. Maria Bakalova is up for best supporting actress, and the movie is also in the running to win the Oscar for best-adapted screenplay. Disney will also have a major presence this year with Soul, Onward, Pinocchio, and Mulan all making various shortlists.

The rules as to who and what can qualify for the Academy Awards this year were changed to accommodate the closure of movie theaters during the pandemic. The caveat of having to have been released in theaters has been ditched this year since many studios have been forced to air their projects exclusively on streaming services. Had that not happened, then Sonic would have cleaned up this year.

Thanks to the altered entry requirements, Sonic hasn't made a single appearance in the list of nominations. Check out the video above or head to The Academy's official Twitter account to check out all the nominees in every category. You will be able to watch the Academy Awards live on April 25, 2021, later than usual thanks to the pandemic. The industry is hoping normal service will resume shortly after that. Disney remains adamant it will release Black Widow in theaters on May 7, 2021.
