Outriders: New Horizon has given Outriders fans four new Expeditions to test their endgame builds on. One of these Expeditions is Molten Depths, a level that uses the same tileset as the campaign's Eagle Peaks mountain. Some of that tileset's enemies have returned in Molten Depths as well.

This mission has no CT or Drop Pod requirements, and it's fairly short for high DPS builds—making it a fantastic Expedition to farm. This guide will give a quick overview of the enemies you'll encounter, and we'll give an in-depth breakdown of each encounter tied to this Expedition. We hope you aren't afraid of spiders.

Updated January 19th, 2022, by Charles Burgar: We've updated this guide to include a few ability recommendations for each class alongside some mods to make this Expedition easier to clear on higher Challenge Tiers. We've also added a section that explains how you can access this Expedition's Ruiner chest, unlocking unique cosmetic skins for your weapons.

Molten Depths Enemies

Outriders Molten Depths Expedition Screen

If you haven't played Outriders in a minute, Expedition timers are no longer a thing. You can take as long as you want to finish these missions, regardless of Challenge Tier.

This mission contains nothing but Warzone Bestiary enemies. You'll mostly be facing Perforos with a healthy mix of Crawlers, Screechers, and Stryx. Alpha Perfora stunlock spam is still a potential threat, so consider playing a build with good crowd control or mobility. If you can lock the enemies in place, this mission should be fairly easy. The final encounter is also a boss fight with a plethora of AoE attacks that deal fire damage. If you're attempting CT15, Anomaly Resistance or some damage mitigation mods are highly recommended.

Outriders New Horizon Expedition

Devastator

Endless Mass is a fantastic skill for this Expedition, grouping all of the Beast enemies together into a neat pile. You can then use Earthquake, Gravity Leap, or your favorite weapon to take everyone down. If you're struggling to defeat the final boss, Golem is a great choice.

Pyromancer

Ash Blast and Overheat work very well in this mission, mostly due to how many melee enemies are present. It also makes an obelisk section of Molten Depths much easier.

Technomancer

Blighted Rounds, Cold Snap, and Scrapnel all work well in this mission to give you some good AoE and single-target damage. For Blighted Rounds, rock any tactical rifle.

Trickster

Twisted Rounds is generally smoother than an Anomaly build for this Expedition, mostly due to the number of flying enemies and the final boss. If you decide to use Temporal Blade, we highly recommend you use Borrowed Time or Time Rift.

Mods

Mitigation from Death is highly recommended to keep you alive on higher Challenge Tiers. Snowsquall on your pistols can also be useful, allowing you to freeze a wave of enemies by firing a few bullets before reloading. You'll also want damage-scaling mods to make the final boss easier. Finally, consider some mods that grant Anomaly Resistance to reduce the damage of the Fleshmolt Acari boss.

Opening Encounter

Outriders Molten Depths Opening Area

Your first encounter will be on a sheet of ice with a few snow mounds as cover. This section will swarm you with fodder Perforo enemies and Screechers, birds that can easily stun you if left unattended. You'll want to focus on the Screechers first, damaging them as much as possible to force them to land. When they land, finish them off quickly with your abilities or weapons before they take off. You shouldn't have much issue fighting the Perforo enemies. Remember: if an Alpha is attempting to leap attack, melee right when you notice. You can't be stunned mid-melee animation.

After clearing out the area, a Brood Mother and a horde of Perforos will spawn. A cutscene will trigger before they spawn, refreshing all of your cooldowns. You can either clump all of the enemies together before using your AoE attacks or focus the Brood Mother. Either way, try to clear out these enemies as fast as possible, as additional Screechers will spawn soon after. If you can't kill the Brood Mother quickly, make the Screechers your top priority. Kite the enemies around the arena if your health gets low. When you've cleared the area, punch the sheet of ice near the Brood Mother's spawn location to proceed.

Abandoned Mine

Outriders Molten Depths Mine

Destroying the sheet of ice will plunge you into the depths of an abandoned mine. Unless you thrive in close-quarters combat, we recommend you don't stray too far or fight near the center of the mine. A small pack of Perforos will attack you here, posing virtually no threat if you have a good build.

You'll be rushed by a Raging Behemoth soon after. This enemy has a hefty chunk of armor, so Anomaly-based attacks will work best here. A second Behemoth will spawn shortly afterward near the opposite end of the mine. You can either lure both together before killing them or pick them off one at a time. Perforos will also rush you, some of which are Alphas, so stay mobile. You have a rather large arena to play with here, so take advantage of it.

When you've killed both Behemoths and most of the Perforos, a final wave with a third Raging Behemoth and Crawlers will spawn. If you see an AoE attack shaped like a line appear, start running. That means a Crawler is about to freeze you. Take out the Crawlers as fast as you can, then focus on the rest of the enemies. Break the ice wall at the end of the mine once you're done to start a defense section.

Totem Defense Section

Outriders Molten Depths Totem

This is a defense section, tasking you with standing atop a Totem while fighting waves of enemies. Most of the enemies in this part are Perforos and Maulers, nothing you can't handle. However, pay attention when the Totem is 50% and 75% captured. Around halfway through this section, Alpha Perforos will rush your location. They can stunlock you if you aren't careful.

At around 75% capture, two Crawlers will spawn at opposite ends of the cave. Even if you're playing solo, you'll want to hop off the Totem to kill the Crawlers. There's virtually no cover here, so one Crawler freeze can end your run at higher Challenge Tiers. Beyond that, stand atop the Totem until the nearby ice wall breaks.

Mining Cave Continued

Outriders Molten Depths Mine Cont

Capturing the Totem will destroy an ice wall, revealing a large group of beasts. This is when you'll first face Stryx bugs, flying enemies that can inflict poison and stun you. They're fairly hard to hit, so either close the gap or use your weapons from range. Focus them down first, then kill the rest of the enemies.

Outriders Molten Depths Explosive Spiders

You'll also be fighting Flame Hoppers for the first time since the campaign. These are explosive spiders that move quickly and deal moderate damage when slain. One of them is hardly a threat, but a swarm of them can easily down you if they get too close. Thankfully, these spiders are extremely weak to just about all damage. Clear out the cave of Perforos and spiders to proceed. They'll be a Brood Mother towards the end of this encounter, so have your abilities ready.

Freshmolt Acari Boss

Outriders Freshmolt Acari Boss

The Molten Acari fight from the campaign is the final boss here, its third worm phase omitted. This spider is highly mobile, releases a barrage of AoE fire attacks, and tends to leap onto walls when it takes damage. Damaging any part of its body will destroy its molten armor, revealing fleshy weak points that take much more damage.

Supporting this spider is a wave of Flame Hoppers and Stryx. The Stryx are a serious concern here, poisoning you from a long distance. When the Acari jumps onto a wall, you'll have a good opportunity to kill these flying bugs. Flame Hoppers won't give you much issue. Kill them to trigger any on-kill mods on your gear.

Unlike the campaign, this boss doesn't have invulnerability phases. If you deal enough damage, you can obliterate its health bar to instantly finish this Expedition. The mission ends once the spider dies, so you'll want to focus on the Acari above all else. Once again, a barrage of AoE attacks are present here, so don't be afraid to slow down some to kill the Flame Hoppers for HP. Destroy the Acari to claim your loot.

Ruiner Weapon Location

Outriders Ruiner Thrall Skin
  • Guaranteed Skin (First Clear): Ruiner Thrall

Opening the Ruiner chest for the first time in this Expedition will give you the Ruiner Thrall skin—a unique sniper rifle skin that covers your weapon in flesh and bone.

Outriders Molten Depths Ruiner Phone

To unlock this skin, you must first defeat the Freshmolt Acari boss. Right as you claim your loot, turn around and run to the other side of the cavern. You'll find a ringing telephone. Answer the phone to access a hidden room that contains the Ruiner chest.
