The original game was released for Microsoft Windows, PS4, and Xbox One in 2016, while a Nintendo Switch version was released in 2017. A sequel, Overcooked 2, was released in 2018. Meanwhile, Overcooked! All You Can Eat, a remastered bundle that includes both titles, was released as a launch title for both Xbox Series X|S and PS5 last November.

Overcooked, which received positive reviews upon release, was nominated for four awards at the 13th British Academy Games Awards, eventually winning two for Best British Game and Best Family Game. The game was based on Ghost Town Games founder Phil Duncan's past experience in restaurants.

According to Duncan, "Kitchens have always struck me as a perfect analogy for a cooperative game: an occupation where teamwork, time management, spatial awareness and shouting are all vitally important."

Overcooked was developed as a local co-op game for up to four players. The game has a competitive multiplayer option, which requires the chefs to score the most points in a limited time. The game also has a single player mode that allows players to control two chefs, alternating between them, or by selecting a specific control scheme, they can try to control both of them at the same time.

Team17, a British game developer and publisher based in Wakefield, England, has also announced that cross-platform multiplayer was coming to the bundle, but via a post-launch update.
