Overwatch 2's launch is almost here, and news about the sequel has been arriving thick and fast ahead of the big day on October 4. The latest reveal by Blizzard comes in the form of a tweak that appears to encourage players to swap heroes mid-match. Slightly controversial as it comes a week after the studio claimed people don't really do that.

As reported by PC Gamer, Blizzard has detailed a number of balance changes that will be made to Overwatch 2 ahead of its launch based on feedback received during its two betas. The biggest change will affect the sequel's role passives. During one of the betas, damage heroes were given a passive that allows them to retain 30 percent of their ultimate damage when swapping between heroes.

This week's balance changes mean all heroes will now have that passive. That means regardless of the hero you switch to mid-match, you will retain 30 percent of their ultimate damage. Evidently a way to encourage players to swap heroes during a match if one isn't working out for them, even allowing them to retain a chunk of the ultimate damage they've built up despite switching to a hero with a different class.

On the surface this is good news. However, it flies in the face of comments Blizzard made a week ago. Comments that were made in its latest attempt to defend the decision to lock heroes behind Overwatch 2's battle passes. Blizzard VP Jon Spector claimed most players stick to the same heroes and don't switch things up that often anyway, so if one or two are missing from their roster, it doesn't really matter.

The backlash towards Blizzard's battle pass decisions comes following the reveal Overwatch 2's first new hero Kiriko can't be unlocked until the 55th tier of the first battle pass's free path. Those not willing to grind that much can pay $10 for the premium pass and unlock her automatically. Behind the scenes, investigations and lawsuits surrounding allegations made against Activision Blizzard and some of its employees continues.
