Overwatch 2 players are labelling the sequel's matchmaking "unfair" and "awful", as those in lower ranks say they're being paired up with opponents as high as top 500.

This comes after Overwatch 2 shook up how ranks are changed in competitive play, seemingly damaging the game's ability to match players up with others of similar skill. This is apparently leading to players in Gold and Platnum being matched up with others in Grandmaster, irritating both sides of the divide.

"I had a Genji teammate with the top 500 tag on my team. At first, I thought maybe there's a glitch to get [this] title," says Reddit user Dru247, who then checked the player's profile and saw that they were indeed in top 500.

"He proceeded to ABSOLUTELY DESTROY the other team. Team wipes left and right, they didn't stand a chance. It was incredible to watch but so unfair."

Others in the replies report the same happening to them, equally frustrated to see the matchmaking place these players together.

"Since OW2 started, it's pretty much just a shitshow," says guillotineswordz. "I am currently ranked in Master in the DPS queue, and I'll still frequently get Gold/Silver players, or players with a default icon that don't seem to know how to play the game."

Another user in the comments, ckillXD, has a theory as to why this happening. "As someone with a Master tag, it's due to the rank reset at beginning of season," they explain. "Being reset from Masters 2 to Plat 2 killed my motivation to play the game. When I randomly play a match now, it's a complete moshpit of actual Gold and Plat players and players like me with Masters/GM/Top 500 tags."

Overwatch 2 has faced complaints about its matchmaking since launch. A couple of weeks ago, Blizzard even tried to explain why some players may see these vastly different ranks in their matches, saying that it's because their "hidden" SRs are similar. This hidden rank isn't shown on profiles, and changes based on your win/loss ratio even on Quick Play. However, as Dru247 explains in the initial post, it doesn't seem like the top 500 Genji main had a similar hidden rank to the Golds and Platinums they were paired with.

It remains to be seen in Blizzard will issue another response to these ongoing complaints.
