Prior to the start of the 2019 Overwatch League Grand Finals match, EDM star and Overwatch fan Zedd performed a few of his hit songs for Philadelphia's Wells Fargo Center audience. Right before Zedd walked on stage, an overhead video screen played a short clip of Widowmaker on Hanamura, decked out in a unique Zedd-themed skin.

Blizzard has yet to confirm (or deny) whether or not this Zedd skin will be something available to all Overwatch players, or simply a fun addition to Zedd's performance. This year has featured more Overwatch League token-exclusive cosmetics than last year—London Spitfire's Winston skin and Jjonak's Zenyatta skin this year, compared to last year's single Lúcio emote—so an additional Grand Finals surprise may not be out of the question. However, there is a lack of precedent for a musical performer, or anyone not Blizzard-affiliated for that matter, getting their own in-game cosmetic.

What could make Zedd an ideal candidate to set this precedent is his noted fandom of both Overwatch and the Overawatch League. While there's no official record of Zedd's in-game competitive ranking, it ranges from somewhere between high platinum and grandmaster, placing him in the top half of Overwatch players even at his lowest expected possible skill level. Plus, long before Zedd was announced to be this year's Grand Finals performer, the friendship between Zedd and the NYXL (notably the NYXL's off-tank MekO) had been well documented on social media, both as proof of the DJ and producer's Overwatch bona fides, and the authenticity of the NYXL's brand of New York cool.

In the initial announcement video for his performance, Zedd promised to perform as "Widow, Tracer or Zedd," in his own words, which sounded like it could have been a joke, or a promise of something fun to come (as it seems to have been). Plus, in his opening remarks for the Grand Finals, new Overwatch League commissioner Pete Vlastelica promised that Zedd's performance would be a "Zedd Overwatch League set" rather than a conventional set.

Since the only part of Zedd's performance that was particularly Overwatch-centric was the Widowmaker skin tease, this seems to be what was being hinted at prior. As to whether the skin will eventually appear in-game, only time—and possibly enough hype to convince Blizzard that it would be a well-received addition to the game—will tell.
