Overwatch League kicks off the 2019 playoffs with the 7-12 play-ins on Friday, August 30th. The six teams will fight for the remaining two playoff spots in a single elimination tournament. There are a lot of exciting teams in the play-ins and a few have the chance to make a deep run into the Overwatch League post-season.

The Teams

(12) Chengdu Hunters - The Chengdu hunters barely got into these season play-ins. If the LA Valiant had won another match we wouldn't be talking about them. Luckily, they have another chance, but they will be facing off against the red-hot Guangzhou Charge. With a 13-15 record the Hunters need to show that they belong here. Going against the meta all year resulted in exciting matches with the Hunters, but to truly make it far they will need to clean up their often sloppy play.

(11) Shanghai Dragons - The Dragons are a frustrating team. They ran through every team during their stage three playoffs in dominating fashion and the 2-2-2 role lock seemed like a perfect fit for the DPS focused team. Unfortunately, they have not been able to adapt to the meta very well and with the introduction of Sigma in the playoffs, the meta will be shifting once again. It's tough to tell how the Dragons will do going forward but if they struggle with another new meta, their season will be ending quicker than they would like.

(10) Philadelphia Fusion - The runner-ups from last season's Grand Finals, you never know what team you are going to get when facing the Fusion. They don't have a lot of weaknesses in their roster, but their greatest challenges seem to be the mental aspect of the game. When they are at their best, they can beat pretty much anyone in the league, but they tend to play below their potential a lot. It's tough to tell which Philly team we will be getting this post-season.

(9) Guangzhou Charge - The Charge are one of the hottest teams in the Overwatch League right now. They went 6-1 through stage 4, losing only to the London Spitfire. The team doesn't seem to be slowing down anytime soon and if they can keep playing solid Overwatch, they have a chance to not only make it into the top 8 playoffs, but also make a deep run towards the Grand Finals.

(8) Seoul Dynasty - The Dynasty have never quite lived up to the lofty expectations that were on them when the Overwatch League first started last season. Only a shell of their former team is left and they have been up and down all of the 2019 season. They have the experience and the talent to be a tough team, but like the Fusion, they seem to lack the mentality needed. Still, the Dynasty have a good chance to make the top 8, but there are a few teams possibly standing in the way of that happening.

(7) London Spitfire - The London Spitfire are the reigning 2018 Overwatch League Champions. They have the talent to beat anyone in the league, but their play tends to fluctuate drastically. The Spitfire rode the meta into the championship last year, and if they are able to adapt to the new meta, they can make a run at defending their title.

Players To Watch

Jinmu - Chengdu Hunters: Jinmu is the star DPS of the Hunters and if they want to advance, he will need to carry pretty hard. He's capable of doing it, but we will have to see if he actually can.

Dding - Shanghai Dragons: Dding has the best Pharah in the league, but he needs to prove his versatility a little more. His play will be the biggest factor for the Dragons.

Carpe - Philadelphia Fusion: Carpe is a mixed bag this year. He was once one of the best (if not the best) DPS player in the league and an MVP candidate last year. He hasn't lived up the insane expectations placed on his since and he is an important piece in the DPS duo of Philly.

Happy - Guangzhou Charge: Happy is playing lights out right now and his Widowmaker play is the most impressive in the league. He has been one of the biggest factors for the Charge's success and he will look to continue his play in the play-offs.

Ryujehong - Seoul Dynasty: Ryujehong is one of the most iconic players in all of Overwatch history. He wrote the book on how to dominate with Ana and still has one of the best Ana's in the league. His leadership is the most important factor for the Dynasty. They will need to rally around him to advance.

Birdring - London Spitfire: Birdring is the second half of London's DPS duo. Profit is the star of the Spitfire and is consistently great, but Birdring has his highs and lows. He will need to perform well in the playoffs for London to have a chance to defend their title.

Predictions

The Charge will beat the Hunters and Philly will overcome the Shanghai Dragons. That puts Philadelphia against the Spitfire and the Charge will face off against the Dynasty.

It looks like the London Spitfire and the Guangzhou Charge will be making it out of the play-ins and into the top 8 playoffs next weekend. The Charge are too hot right now and they don't look to be slowing down anytime soon. London is the best team in the play-ins and I think they have a chance to make it far into the overall playoffs. It's tough to count out the Fusion, though as they will make it tough for the Spitfire.

This is looking to be an exciting weekend for Overwatch League fans as teams desperately fight for a chance in the top 8.
