Players that pick up the recently released Overwatch port on the Nintendo Switch will receive a handful of special items and treats, including three free months of Nintendo Switch Online, the Switch's online multiplayer service. The move makes a lot of sense considering that without Nintendo Switch Online, Overwatch is virtually unplayable, as the game has no offline modes or campaigns.

Overwatch, originally released back in May of 2016, provided new life for the online multiplayer genre. It introduced a colorful cast of characters, each with their own strengths and weaknesses, and encouraged teamwork between teams to accomplish specific tasks in competition with another team. Rather than using simple death match game types, Overwatch most utilizes escort and domination-style matches, giving the game's characters a wide array of ways in which they can help their team reach its goal.

Although the game seems simple on the surface, there is a great deal of depth to uncover and layers to peel back in consideration to how the different characters complement one another, and the crazy incidents that can take place during online matches. Not one of the game's thirty-one heroes are quite the same, and mastering each of them can be a game in its own right.

Now for the first time ever, the popular online multiplayer game will be available on a handheld platform, serving as another big step for the Nintendo Switch in exemplifying just how much software the console is capable of handling. Although Overwatch requires an internet connection to play, so you can't necessarily play the game anywhere like other Switch titles.

On top of three free months of Nintendo Switch Online, the game will include every hero and map release thus far, as well as 15 skins and a legendary loot box that is guaranteed to contain at least one legendary skin. The game also promises to utilize the Switch's motion controls, a feature that hasn't been present on any other iteration of the game.

Overwatch is out on the Switch now, giving gamers a great opportunity to experience the revolutionary multiplayer shooter on a handheld console, as well as adding yet another great third-party title the the Switch's growing catalogue of games.
