If you liked Guillermo del Toro’s homage to kaiju and mecha in his 2013 film Pacific Rim, then Dual Gear may be the game for you. The turn-based mecha simulation will be landing on Steam July 29, as an early access title.

Set in the year 2069, military weapons known as THV’s are deployed by the organization UNR to protect the Earth’s orbit from The Watchmaker. As multiple wars ignite over the globe between the two opposing forces, the resistance group NEMOS is created to protect Earth from devastation. Using a new brand of THV’s called Dual Gear, young soldiers are recruited to pilot these mechas and aid UNR in its defense.

Influenced by classic Japanese mech games, Dual Gear will offer explosive action in real-time while developing its unique story. An array of submachine guns and melee devices will be available to your unit during missions, that features a Tactical View to enable efficient team management. The various machines in your team will, of course, be ready for weapon and armor upgrades through buying and selling different components. Mechs will also have a coloring module to enhance customization, where pilots can get creative and prepare their war machine for any terrain or weather condition.

Developer and publisher Orbital Speed Studio released an early access trailer that showcased gameplay surrounding NEMOS’ defense of a concrete base. Characters such as Neil Cersen and Alma Bright can be controlled and interchanged through the game’s turn-based layer system, where combat strategies can be handled effectively. The opening sequence featured in the trailer will be the first act of the game, consisting of some training before mission deployment. It was stated on the Dual Gear’s steam page that this first act will be available during the early access launch, and there will be more updates to follow.

Followers of Dual Gear have compared its gameplay to Square Enix’s (previously known as Square) Front Mission series, which ran for 15 years. Front Mission’s latest release Left Alive was labelled as a failure by fans, who were generally disappointed in the 2019 title that released after the series' 9 year hiatus. Dual Gear is expected to fill the void that the 1995 shooter franchise left, that will continue the mecha craze within the world of gaming.
