Those of you who are looking for a free-to-play hero-based shooter on the Nintendo Switch are in luck, as Paladins is now available for free on the console.

Paladins has been available for the Nintendo Switch since June 12th, but you had to pay for the Founder's Pack in order to be able to play it early. The Founder's Pack gave you instant access to all of the Champions in the game and will do the same for future characters, as well as giving you some items that were exclusive to the Founder's Pack.

The Founder's Pack is no longer available to purchase, but you can still unlock all of the Champions using the in-game currency, which can also be purchased from the Nintendo Eshop.

The Nintendo Switch version of Paladins also has crossplay capability with the Xbox One. You still cannot crossplay with the PlayStation 4, due to the fact that Sony is still being pigheaded about the whole thing.

The Switch port of Paladins is very impressive, with very few compromises being made to the quality of the game when played in handheld mode. Paladins has followed in the footsteps of Fortnite in showing how impressive games can look and function in handheld mode on the Switch, with that portability factor making some players consider the Switch port to be the definitive version of each game.

Paladins is aiming to fill the Overwatch-shaped hole in the Nintendo Switch's library. Blizzard has yet to show any real support for the Nintendo Switch, even though games like Hearthstone and Overwatch are begging for ports to the system. This means that Paladins may be able to find a huge audience among the Nintendo fanbase, as there really isn't any other game like it on the system.

If Paladins manages to become a success on the Switch (as Fortnite has been) then it may prompt other popular free-to-play games to make the jump as well, like Warframe is in the process of doing. We may also see Blizzard finally take the leap and start developing some ports for the system as well.

Paladins is available to download for free right now on the Nintendo Switch.
