Forget the rumors PlayStation is finally preparing to reveal whatever Project Spartacus is. It's finally Sonic the Hedgehog 2 week. Well, not for people in North America, sorry about that. The sequel hits UK cinemas this Friday though and the first reviews are finally in. The good news is the second movie sounds like it will very much live up to the hype, building on the success of the first movie and maybe even surpassing it in terms of quality.

Even though the reviews are in, don't panic. You'll find no spoilers here. There are some non-specific elements of movie Sonic's future to discuss, though. It was already known that the blue blur's journey will continue beyond Sonic 2 as Paramount has already signed off on a third movie and Knuckles spinoff series. However, producer Toby Ascher has confirmed to VGC that the goal is to build an entire Sonic cinematic universe.

“We’re creating a Sonic cinematic universe, so we knew we were going to add characters, like Tails and Knuckles; new to the films but beloved by gamers all over the world,” Ascher explained. That presumably means more Sonic characters are coming. Again, no spoilers, but some of the first people to see the second movie have communicated to fans that they will want to stay until the very end of the movie, after the credits have rolled.

Those who did that during the first movie will know that's where Paramount first revealed Tails. The fox appeared through a ring portal during the credits and is a huge part of the second movie. Tails seemingly won't be going anywhere either. According to Giant Freakin' Robot, Sonic's sidekick will be getting a movie of his very own in the future, and work on that project has apparently already begun.

Sonic 2 appears to be a lot more of a blockbuster than the first movie with epic fight sequences between Sonic and Knuckles, and Carrey's Robotnik bringing some of the antagonist's iconic mechs to the big screen. Not long to wait until we get to see it for ourselves and find out whether there is another new character introduced during Sonic 2's credits. My money's on Shadow, although Amy would also be a cool addition to what we now know is an entire cinematic universe being built around the blue blur.
