Parkitect is getting a free update that adds online multiplayer. The update releases on December 8.

Texel Raptor, the developers of Parkitect, are celebrating the release of Parkitect 1.0. Parkitect released two years ago this week, and to celebrate, a new update is launching that adds co-op. Up to eight players can build a theme park together online. Players can see what other players are building, so they can coordinate how to build the park. One person can build the rollercoaster, while someone else builds the building that leads up to the rollercoaster. Players can invite other players to lobbies through Steam.

Adding multiplayer to Parkitect is interesting for a theme park simulator considering these games are usually single-player. Many fans will be happy to be able to play the game with friends, especially during a pandemic. The spiritual successor to Rollercoaster Tycoon adds an eight-player multiplayer mode, where Rollercoaster Tycoon World had a four-player co-op mode. Eight player co-op seems like it could get very chaotic, and people might clash over how the park should look or could run into budgeting issues really fast. However, this sounds like a lot of fun with two to three other friends. With good cooperation and planning, it will be exciting to see what theme parks come out of these new co-op levels.

The trend for games during this awful year has been being able to connect with friends, which is reflected in successes like Animal Crossing: New Horizons, Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout, and Among Us. Parkitect's multiplayer update continues this trend of connecting people in new and interesting ways while avoiding going outside during a pandemic. It also adds an interesting element to a beloved formula.

Parkitect is available now on PC. The Steam autumn sale started today, and Parkitect is currently available for 25% off its normal price. The new update releases on December 8. For fans of Rollercoaster Tycoon and other sim games looking for a new theme park simulator, Parkitect is worth checking out.
