Religion is quite a big part of the Pathfinder system, just like in Dungeons and Dragons. It is important to worldbuilding, character creation, and many of the stories that players hack and slash and seduce their way through. Some classes require belief to use some of their features, and sometimes piety is needed to access certain traits.

With such a heavy focus on this aspect of the game, it should come as no surprise that Paizo has come up with an extensive and exhaustive list of gods that players can get to know. While there is a selection of central gods with more fleshed-out backgrounds, there's no end to deities when looking a little deeper.

10 No Stat Block, No Death

Simply put, killing a fully-fledged god is just not going to happen under normal circumstances. No matter how bloodthirsty that PC is, gods cannot be fought since they don't actually have stats. There may be more creative ways of offing a deity, such as cutting off their prayer supply entirely, but this seems like a tough ask. Saying that, gods have died in the lore before.

Many of the worshippable entities do have stat blocks of course, as not every deity is a full god. Many demons, cosmic horrors, and demigods can and probably will end up slain at some point or another.

9 Gods Can Be Created

On Golarion, it is not a case of gods preceding all other life (sort of, we'll get to that) and influencing the world as they see fit. Many popular and important gods didn't start out that way. Two notable examples are Cayden Cailean and Iomedae, who both successfully took the enigmatic Test of the Starstone and gained a spark of divinity, allowing them to ascend to godhood.

Other examples include the clockwork goddess of time and invention, Brigh. Interestingly, it seems to be up for debate whether Brigh was a human turned into a clockwork goddess or a construct who happened to gain a spark of divinity. Similarly, Casandalee is an AI god created from the memories of an android.

8 Some Domains Get More Love Than Others

With so many gods knocking about, it's inevitable that some will have some crossover. There are only so many abstract concepts to go around, after all.

Physical love for example, in all of its forms, is well represented among the host of deities who get worshipped on Golarion. Shelyn, Calistria, and Nocticula are all concerned with this aspect of life, respectively focusing on romantic love, pure lust, and seduction.

7 These Great Old Ones May Be Recognizable

The Old Ones are quite an odd bunch, and that's definitely a choice made on purpose. All but one of them are sourced from the public domain, specifically the Cthulu mythos which was born from the mind of H.P. Lovecraft.

While the Outer Gods are, well, fully-fledged gods, there are also Great Old Ones who are more like demigods. The difference is negligible but all are terrifying. It's worth noting that Cthulu himself is part of Pathfinder canon, as a deity and as a horrific CR 30 monster.

6 The WHAT Is A God?

So, it turns out the entire multiverse might be a god. The 'Monad' is a perfectly viable deity to worship, apparently, and grants the same benefits as any other deity.

Monad is a term used in metaphysical theology to describe a god - as in, the god. It seems only fitting then, that Pathfinder's god of creation and infinity would be called Monad. One has to wonder who would worship such a... being?

5 Atheism Is... Okay, Apparently

Pathfinder Kingmaker Valerie Atheist Fighter

In a world where gods are so obviously real, present, and sometimes meddlesome, it's a bit confusing to consider that atheism exists on Golarion. These brave individuals simply consider that the gods are not as mighty as people say they are and that they are not worthy of reverence. It's a bold stance to take.

Valerie, a Fighter from the isometric RPG Pathfinder: Kingmaker, is an atheist and it forms an interesting part of her story, considering she was raised to be a Paladin of Shelyn.

4 Being Greedy Is Also Allowed

If a player feels like their options for picking a god to worship are a bit limited, they needn't fear. There are quite a few whole pantheons that can be worshipped collectively, granting the same features as single gods.

The elves and dwarves have their own pantheons, as do dragons, giants, the entire continent of Tian Xia, and even the goblins have their Hero-Gods. Worshipping a pantheon seems like a clever choice for a PC who wishes to hedge their bets and please as many deities as possible at once.

3 Being The Cleric Of A Horseman Of The Apocalypse Is Totally Fine

Pathfinder Four Horsemen of the apocalypse charon apollyon szuriel trelmarixian

The four classic horsemen of the apocalypse are, naturally, canonical in Pathfinder thanks to the existence of the Neutral Evil realm of Abaddon. Apollyon, Charon, Szuriel, and Trelmarixian are the horsemen in question, ruling over pestilence, death, war, and famine respectively.

Szuriel and Trelmarixian are interesting cases as they used to be mortals. Szuriel was even a Paladin, before betraying her faith in a bloody coup that seemed to be revenge for her ex-communication. Very fitting for the horseman of war.

2 Eco-Friendly Worship

Druids and other nature-aligned individuals may find themselves attracted to the Green Faith. While not actually a deity, the Green Faith remains a gameplay option for suitably green-fingered PCs who wish to flesh out their personality.

However, being a part of the Green Faith does not grant the useful and necessary features that conventional targets of worship do, such as Divine Fonts and Cleric Spells. Eco-Warriors (and Eco-Clerics!) should find a similar replacement such as Erastil.

1 Kill A Deity In Pathfinder: Kingmaker

Pathfinder Kingmaker Lantern King boss fight

While many Pathfinder modules have PCs taking down demigods and minor deities, Owlcat's Pathfinder: Kingmaker has the party facing off against a real nasty baddie. The Lantern King is what's known as an Eldest, powerful deities from the First World who may be able to shape the world to their whim at the flick of a flame.

The game has multiple endings, and some of them require the Lantern King to be slain, which is no mean feat. He's a whopping level 40 and the fight can be something of a slog if players aren't prepared for the royal god's onslaught.
