As you progress through Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous, you'll start coming across more complex characters who might seem a little difficult to build. It's quite easy to grasp that Lann makes for a great archer and that Sosiel is simply meant to be a Cleric and not much else, but some characters are a bit trickier.

Take Woljif, for example. He's a Tiefling thief (or thiefling) and can be recruited very early on in the game — as soon as you escape from the Gray Garrison. The problem with Woljif is that he's in a class that many players don't fully understand. Here's what you need to know.

Woljif's Basic Stats

Woljif begins with three levels taken in the Eldritch Scoundrel class. This is a Rogue archetype that trades some physical offensiveness for the ability to cast arcane spells like a Wizard. Woljif has a high 18 Intelligence and an even higher 20 Dexterity, so he is well suited to being a Rogue.

Level

1

2

3

Eldritch Scoundrel 3: Double Slice, Finesse Training (Dagger)

Starting Spells

Level 1: Burning Hands, Color Spray, Flare Burst, Grease, Hypnotism, Mage Armor, Magic Missile, Shocking Grasp, Sleep, Snowball

It's obvious from stats alone that Woljif is geared toward being a two-weapon fighter with magical assistance. A mistake that many players make is thinking that Woljif is the perfect candidate for the Arcane Trickster prestige class, and this is not the case. While the name sounds suitable for a magical rogue, the class's features are far more beneficial for full-casters, unlike Woljif.

The builds presented in this article aim to sustain Woljif's role as a physical attacker with magical backup, but also offer some alternative methods and focuses.

Pure Eldritch Scoundrel Build For Woljif

There is nothing wrong with avoiding multiclassing for the entire game in Wrath of the Righteous, and Eldritch Scoundrel isn't a bad class to exemplify this with. This build just adds more of what we're already using with Woljif — he'll get plenty of Sneak Attack dice, useful spells, and great feat assistance.

19

Eldritch Scoundrel 19: Toughness, Finesse Training (Sickle)

20

Eldritch Scoundrel 20: CON +1, Opportunist

  • You could, if you wanted to, pick a different weapon type for Woljif when it comes to the Focus and Critical feats. We pick Dagger here because Woljif starts with Finesse Training in Daggers and it makes sense to let that synergy work for you — or you wouldn't have a Finesse Trained weapon until Level 11.
    • Shortswords make for a good choice thanks to their improved critical range.
    • Sickles are also great thanks to the fantastic enchanted Sickles in the game, most notably Oath of the Sky and Chilly Midnight.
  • Weakening Wound is valuable in Wrath of the Righteous thanks to how much damage resistance there is in the game. With that and Double Debilitation, you'll want Woljif to be putting out Sneak Attacks as much as he possibly can. Utilize Greater Invisibility to make this happen.
  • The final stat boost in this build (and both of the other builds in this article) goes to Constitution as Woljif wouldn't benefit from any other stat at that level.
  • Arcane Strike is a great little boost to Woljif's offense as it synergizes well with his perfect 20/20 caster levels.

Extra Feat: Accomplished Sneak Attacker

  • While Woljif is primarily a physical attacker, taking the Abundant Casting feats does mean that he has more room to breathe when it comes to slotting in magic. He has access to plenty of great spells to use for support and offense.
  • Archmage Armor can be fantastic in this game with enough Mythic Ranks, and as a close-range fighter, you'll want Woljif to take advantage of it as much as possible.
  • If you decide to change up which weapon you're focusing on with Woljif, make sure you take that weapon's Mythic Feats too.
  • Accomplished Sneak Attacker is an easy slot to change around, per your preferences.

Useful Spells

Level 1: Mage Armor, Grease, Magic Missile

Level 2: Create Pit, Mirror Image, False Life, Sense Vitals, Glitterdust, Cat's Grace

Level 3: Spiked Pit, Haste, Greater Magic Weapon, Blink, Lightning Bolt

Level 4: Controlled Fireball, Acid Pit, Greater False Life, Greater Invisibility

Level 5: Hungry Pit, Dismissal, Break Enchantment

Level 6: Greater Dispel Magic, Create Undead, Chain Lightning, Eyebite, Mass Cat's Grace

  • Woljif is quite a balanced caster, taking the spells above into account.
    • He has plenty of buffing utility with Haste, Greater Invisibility, and Greater Magic Weapon.
    • His offensive support options are the eternally useful Pit spells that can turn the tide of battle in an instant.
    • Ranged damage spells mean that Woljif always has something to do, even when he can't reach an enemy with his daggers.
    • His selfish buffing spells (False Life, Sense Vitals, etc.) keep Woljif toe-to-toe with comparable martial characters and help him compete well enough.
  • Summoning spells like Create Undead are always good for providing distractions in messy fights and can enable Sneak Attacks easily through flanking.

Eldritch Knight Build For Woljif

Pathfinder Wrath of the Righteous Woljif Eldritch Knight Build
Eldritch Knight build for Woljif in Pathfinder Wrath of the Righteous

While the Eldritch Scoundrel build keeps Woljif quite balanced, this build leans heavily on the physical side of the Tiefling rogue. It sacrifices some spell progression to unlock and then pursue the Eldritch Knight prestige class, which suits Woljif well.

With Eldritch Knight, Woljif will still improve his spellcasting whilst gaining bonus combat feats and the fantastic capstone ability, which allows him to quicken spells whenever he makes a critical hit with his weapons. We go for Rapiers in this build, thanks to their fantastic critical range — we're going for action economy and quickened spells here.

19

Eldritch Scoundrel 8: Exhausting Critical, Slippery Mind

20

Dragonheir Scion 2: CON +1, Greater Weapon Specialization (Rapier)

  • To take levels in Eldritch Knight, Woljif needs Martial Weapons Proficiency. You can get that by taking a level in Dragonheir Scion. This is for three reasons:
    1. It is a Fighter archetype that means you can get a bonus feat at Level 20 by taking a second level in the class.
    2. You don't have to waste a feat on Martial Weapons Proficiency.
    3. Dragonheir Scion comes with Arcane Strike as a bonus feat that Woljif will still get to benefit from.
  • The Draconic Bloodline you take with Dragonheir Scion doesn't matter in the slightest as we will never put enough levels into the class to benefit from it.
  • You could replace Tiring Critical and Exhausting Critical with any other feats that you prefer, but keep in mind that Exhaustion is such a potent ailment in this game and Woljif will have a great critical hit chance with this build.

Weapon Specialization (Mythic) (Rapier)

Unrelenting Assault

Piranha Strike (Mythic)

  • Thanks to leveling in a Fighter archetype, Woljif will have access to armor. Despite that, he should still be using Mage Armor with the Archmage Armor feat thanks to the fact that armor can make spells fail. There aren't enough feats to go around to counteract this.
  • Ever Ready leads to more attacks, which leads to more critical hits, which leads to more quickened spells!
  • As usual with these build guides, the order in which you take these Mythic Ranks is simply a suggestion, but you might want to prioritize Improved Critical (Mythic) to further enable this build.

Useful Spells

Level 1: Mage Armor, Grease

Level 2: Mirror Image, Sense Vitals, False Life, Frigid Touch, Cat's Grace, Create Pit

Level 3: Haste, Blink, Communal See Invisibility, Heroism, Greater Magic Weapon

Level 4: Greater False Life, Greater Invisibility

Level 5: Geniekind, Echolocation, Dismissal, Break Enchantment, Hungry Pit

Level 6: Mass Cat's Grace, Eyebite, Greater Dispel Magic, Create Undead

  • The reasoning behind this spell list is largely the same as the Pure Eldritch Scoundrel spell list. This list does have a slight emphasis on selfish buffing, though, as this Woljif build really does prioritize his damage output.
  • Use Greater Invisibility and Sense Vitals to buff up Woljif's Sneak Attack output, which suffers in comparison to other builds.
  • Geniekind is a great spell for dealing with any enemies that have elemental vulnerabilities, though they are far and few between in Wrath of the Righteous.

Incense Synthesizer Build For Woljif

Pathfinder Wrath of the Righteous Woljif Incense Synthesizer Alchemist Build
Incense Synthesizer build for Woljif in Pathfinder Wrath of the Righteous

While many players love to hail Vivisectionist as the greatest Alchemist archetype, there is something to be said for Incense Synthesizer and its fantastic ability to play a support role in battles. It's a new archetype for Wrath of the Righteous and focuses on an aura ability that can be customized as you level up.

This build is a slightly more passive one for Woljif that still tries to enable him to tear enemies up with dual-wielded daggers. He can toss infused spells and bombs around in the meantime, and can always just resort to leaping into the fray whilst buffing his allies at the same time.

18

Incense Synthesizer 15: Increased Range

19

Incense Synthesizer 16: Accomplished Sneak Attacker, Grand Mutagen

20

Incense Synthesizer 17: CON +1

  • This build aims to balance four separate aspects of Woljif and manages to do so in a way that makes him a very flexible party member:
    • His physical attacks are still passable thanks to weapon feats and the Sneak Attack gained as an Eldritch Scoundrel. Mutagens make them even better.
    • With Bombs, he has access to decent ranged attacks — this means he doesn't have to use spell slots offensively.
    • Related to that, the spells used in this build are meant to be used to buff the party, either normally or through Infusion.
    • We build his Incense to grant damage bonuses and attempt to make outsiders (possibly the most common enemy type in the game) easier to deal with.
  • Since Woljif doesn't get any further Weapon Finesse traits, it's recommended that you keep him using Daggers to take advantage of the training he already has.

  • Critical Focus could be swapped for Extra Bombs if you find yourself using them more than Woljif's physical attacks.
  • Throw Elixir will significantly upgrade Woljif's supportive capabilities, turning spells that were previously Personal-only into ranged infusions!

Useful Spells

Level 1: Shield, Expeditious Retreat, Targeted Bomb Admixture, Bomber's Eye, Cure Light Wounds

Level 2: Barkskin, False Life, Lesser Restoration

Level 3: Communal Delay Poison, Haste, Thorn Body

Level 4: Greater False Life, Restoration, Death Ward

Level 5: Spell Resistance, Communal Stoneskin

Level 6: Transformation, Heal, Walk through Space

  • The beauty of this build is the ability to apply spells that are normally Personal-only (like Shield and Thorn Body) onto other creatures.
    • This is a quirk shared only with Brown-Fur Transmuter, an Arcanist archetype available only to Kitsune.
  • Stay on the lookout for Personal-range buff spells that would work excellently with Infusion and Throw Elixir. It's a fantastic combo that rewards creativity when coming up with strategies against the strongest foes.
