Kansas City Chiefs star Patrick Mahomes will be the face of Madden NFL 20, with the 23-year-old quarterback being announced as the cover athlete for the upcoming title by EA Sports.

The Chiefs are coming off of a stellar season in which Mahomes set remarkable records, becoming the first player to throw over 5,000 yards in a single campaign, both in the NFL and college, and the first to throw at least 50 touchdown passes during one season.

The quarterback came close to leading the Chiefs to this year's Super Bowl but they were bested by eventual winners, the New England Patriots. He ended the campaign as the league's Most Valuable Player and the Offensive Player of the Year.

EA, meanwhile, has also revealed a few new features including a new career campaign called "Face of the Franchise: QB1". The mode will have players create their own college quarterback before working their way through the College Football Playoff, the NFL Draft Combine, the NFL Draft, then to the NFL, according to Polygon. The publishers say the game will hand players unique playable scenarios and dynamic challenges that will see to it that each player's season feels different.

Madden 20 will also boast the return of NCAA teams to video games; players will be able to choose from Clemson, Florida State, Miami, Florida, LSU, Oregon, USC Texas, Oklahoma, Texas Tech (where Mahomes played his college football).

EA dropped it's NCAA Football series in 2013 following suits brought about by athletes whose likenesses were used without their permission. They would settle for $40 million but Oregon and Texas did appear in Madden NFL 18's Longshot story mode, which has not been confirmed for a third chapter - there's no mention on whether or not the new Franchise mode will be replacing it.

Face of the Franchise could herald the return of the NCAA football series but it appears that not all college divisions are on board as no Big Ten schools are among the 10 available in the upcoming game.

Madden, set for launch on August 2, will be available for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC via Origin.
