Pentiment won't tell you who the canonical murderer involved in the game's central mystery is.

Despite details about Pentiment having leaked many months before today's Xbox and Bethesda showcase, it still managed to be one of the highlights of the whole event. The reveal trailer for the game gave us a look at the game's main plot, which will have the game's main character Andreas Maler essentially becoming a detective to solve a murder that his mentor and friend is accused of committing.

IGN had the chance to speak to Josh Sawyer, the director of Pentiment, who gave a little more detail on how the game's mystery will play out. Most interestingly of all is the reveal from Sawyer that players will never officially find out who the murderer is, leaving it completely up to them to decide the narrative.

Sawyer said, "One of the key things in the game is that we do not ever definitively tell you, canonically, (who) the murderer (is). You have to investigate, find as much evidence as you can. You make your decisions based on whatever you think is most important. You are basically deciding who's going to pay for the crime. That can be the person that you think actually did it. That can be the person that you think should be punished, whether or not they did it. Maybe it's the person you like least. Maybe it's the person you think that the community will miss the least.”

The interview with Sawyer also reveals that Pentiment's story will take place over a period of 25 years. In that time span, Andreas will get "roped into" several different crimes, murders, and conspiracies. Although this may make it seem as if Pentiment is all about solving mysteries, Sawyer says that it's not a detective game because it's more focused on being a narrative adventure with choice and consequence.

One interesting example of how choices will have consequence is that players will be able to choose what Andreas specialised in at University, a choice that will influence the sorts of conversations he can have and ways of sourcing information
