*Note that this feature contains MAJOR spoilers for Persona 5 Royal.*

Atlus' 2017 JRPG mega-hit Persona 5 was a game filled with foreshadowing. From Akechi's iconic pancakes line to the identity of Joker's blackmailer, the original game was filled with plenty of subtle hints and clues that were often passed off as irrelevant when first shown - but were later revealed to be ultimate twists.

The recently-released Persona 5 Royal continued this pattern, with its own fix of original surprises - like the identity of the final palace's owner and the nature behind Akechi's survival. But probably the biggest twist in the enhanced game was the revelation that Joker's new friend "Kasumi Yoshizawa" had died almost a year ago, and the girl he had been hanging out with was actually her younger sister, Sumire, who had been impersonating her sister as a way to cope with survivor's guilt.

While some of the other surprises were foreshadowed a bit more heavy-handedly, "Kasumi's" true identity was one that many didn't see coming. After all, the game does a pretty solid job of keeping the facade up. However, there's one critical piece of dialogue that occurs early on during the second day of the game that hints towards Kasumi's death.

On April 10, the day when Sojiro first drives Joker to Shujin Academy, the two get stuck in heavy traffic on the way back to Leblanc. While in the car, Sojiro hears a radio announcer talk about the recent string of train derailments, recounting the most recent accident that had happened earlier that day. "So that's why it's so crowded," Sojiro comments, acknowledging the traffic. "There's been a lot of those [accidents] lately. In fact, there was a real sad one just last month." He then goes on to say, "If I remember right, the girl that passed away was only fifteen."

Though the identity of the victim means nothing to Joker at the time, looking back its clear that the fifteen-year-old girl Sojiro was referring to was none other than the genuine Kasumi Yoshizawa. After all, we know that Kasumi died right before Joker transferred to Shujin, she was fifteen-years-old, and that she and Sumire lived in Tokyo.
