In Ancient Egypt worshiping the gods was part of everyday life and this is reflected in the Religion system of Pharaoh A New Era. Each city you build will have up to five gods who all expect devotion from your citizens. If the city has a patron god you'll need to make sure they get extra attention or the consequences could be dire.
Each god can be appeased by building Shrines and Temples, which will also increase the Prosperity rating of your city. In this guide, we take a look at the benefits of worshiping each of the gods, and the consequences of ignoring them.
Religion Overview
There are five gods in Egypt that you may be required to worship. They are Bast, Goddess of the Home, Osiris, God of Agriculture, Ptah, God of Craftsmen, Ra, God of the Kingdom, and Seth, God of Destruction. However, most cities are not watched over by all five gods. Under the Religion menu, you'll be able to see which are active in any given area. If you have a patron god they will expect more Temples and Shrines than the lesser gods. In turn, the lesser gods expect the same amount of attention as each other.
Each god will require you to build Shrines and Temples dedicated to them, and both of these structures must be next to a path. Temples are especially important since they will send out priests and priestesses who will spread the word through the local area. As houses evolve they will require a variety of Temples to be close by.
Building Costs
Religious structures can be expensive but the consequences of not building them can be far more costly. If you are very short on debans, begin with a shrine and work your way up as quickly as possible, starting with any patron god. The costs are as follows:
- Shrine - 70 d
- Temple - 105 d
- Temple Complex - 1400 d
- Temple Complex Altar - 800 d
- Temple Complex Oracle - 800 d
When considering building a Temple Complex you have to weigh up the benefits and the costs, since it will make a hefty dent in your treasury.
Temple Complexes
In later levels you'll also be able to build a Temple Complex to one god of your choice, bringing greater benefits and Prosperity to your city.
You can only have one temple complex per city, so if you have a patron god this is a great way to ensure they get the extra attention they desire. Just make sure to also add an even number of regular temples to each active god alongside it.
A temple complex will also have the option to build an Altar and Oracle at extra cost. Constructing these will give extra benefits to your city. The benefits vary depending on the god being honored.
Festivals
Once you've built a Festival Square you'll also be able to hold up to two festivals a year in honor of any active god. These can be a great way to quickly appease any god who is upset with you.
To hold a festival you can simply click on the festival square and then choose a god and festival size. Each one has a cost, but the more expensive the festival the greater the appreciation of the god. The costs are as follows:
- Common Festival - 106 d
- Lavish Festival - 213 d
- Grand Festival - 425 d and 200 units of beer
You'll need to balance Temple and Shrine construction with regular festivals to keep the gods, and your people happy. Make sure to check the Overseer Of The Temples to keep an eye on the status of each god, as well as the number of structures you have built in their honor. Bast
Bast is the Goddess of the Home, and as a result, keeping her happy will benefit your citizens, making them satisfied with fewer supplies and services. Bast's benevolence will grant the following benefits:
- Citizens consume food and goods at a reduced rate
- The effects of educators, entertainers, and health providers will last longer

When angered, Bast is prone to destroying houses by setting them on fire. She can also send a plague to your city.
Osiris
Osiris is the God of Agriculture. This means that cities with a lot of flood plains will greatly benefit from his blessings. Keeping on the right side of Osiris will lead to the following benefits:
- Floods will be less harsh, leaving some land uncovered and/or lasting for less time
- Floods will continue to improve year-on-year

When angered Osiris will ensure floods are more devastating, and they can even wash away your farms.
Ptah
Ptah is the God of Craftsmen. As a result, keeping him happy will bring boosts to your city's industry, especially those linked with monument building. He will grant a production boost to the following industries.
- Clay Pits
- Copper, Gemstone, and Gold mines
- Jewelers
- Shipwrights
- Weavers
A Temple Complex built in honor of Ptah can also grant these benefits:

An angry Ptah can destroy industrial buildings. This includes setting fire to storage yards, which can be especially devastating if it spreads.
Ra
Ra is God of the Kingdom and keeping him happy will be hugely beneficial to the entire city, affecting not just the city itself but also those around it. You'll encounter the following blessings from Ra.
- Increases your Kingdom Rating
- Lower interest rate paid on city debt
- Increase profit from trade

If angered, Ra can lower your kingdom rating and negatively affect your trade routes.
Seth
Seth is the God of Destruction, so you won't want to get on his bad side. For cities under siege his wrath can be turned against those who seek to harm your city by providing the following boosts:
- City soldiers will be granted more experience
- City soldiers will be protected in battle

An angry Seth can turn against your armies, destroying ships and forts, as well as the troops attached to them.
The Benefits Of Happy Gods
While the gods have very specific benefits if you keep them happy they can all benefit your city in the following ways:
- Protect the city from invaders, smiting them on arrival
- Increase goods in your warehouses
- Improve citizens moods
You'll also need to build Temples to ensure your housing evolves, so it holds more citizens who are happier and pay higher taxes. So make sure you start small, keep Shrine and Temple numbers as even as possible, with an extra for any patron god, and route your paths so priests and priestesses can visit your citizens. Everyone will benefit.
