Allowing players to experience what it's like being a ghost hunter, Kinetic Games' Phasmophobia has had a surge in popularity due to its well-designed, 2021 easter egg-laden Halloween event. Players welcomed the release of the new Maple Lodge Campsite map, the first predominantly outdoor map of the game, new ghost additions, and the new 'Nightmare' difficulty.

Although players noticed the occasional easter egg in Phasmophobia previously, the Maple Lodge Campsite map added a host of new additions, referencing cult horror films such as the Friday the 13th series, as well as paying homage to a staple of horror gaming, Slender Man. Although players are constantly finding interesting aspects to the game, there are a few easter eggs that are among the best.

Updated May 15, 2022 by Morgan Denham: Although the game is still in its Early Access stage, the player-base of Phasmophobia is steadily growing, with many of the updates catering to suggestions for improvement from the community. The release of the 'Cursed Possessions' and 'VR Overhaul' updates have seen major changes and improvements to the game, adding not only entirely new aspects to gameplay but also fixing long-standing issues that occurred when playing the game in VR. Alongside these game-changing updates, a few more easter eggs around the maps were slipped in for players to discover on their ghost-hunting adventures.

10 A New Home In Sunny Meadows

UV writing in Phasmophobia

UV writing has played a large role in messages left for players by the developers of Phasmophobia, ranging from notes in the lobby to secret messages on in-game maps. Accompanying the 'VR Overhaul' update, this Easter egg came in two parts.

Firstly, players noticed a barcode on a Ghost model that pointed to room seven of the Asylum. Upon visiting this room, players are able to use UV lighting to see writing on the wall, referencing a patient wanting to find a new home somewhere called 'Sunny Meadows'. This message was later confirmed in the 'Development Preview #1' to be a secret reference to the upcoming full rework of the Asylum map.

9 The Lighthouse In The Dark

One thing that has remained consistent throughout the history of Phasmophobia, is that the developers have a great sense of humor. 2022's April Fools' Day 'Exposition' patch release was proof of this, with many of the supposed changes causing much hilarity in the community.

One of the additions in the joke patch notes was a new map in a Lighthouse which, in the 'VR Overhaul' update, became referenced on the Maple Lodge Campsite map. When walking to the end of the pier and gazing up to the treeline on the left, you are able to see the outline of a Lighthouse. Players are still holding out for the possibility of a Lighthouse map, though.

8 Penitentiary Puns

Prison Map Phasmophobia Puns

As one of the larger locations in the game, many people can get lost in the expansiveness of the Prison map, not noticing the little details that make the map special. Judging by the Easter eggs on this map, it's safe to assume that the developers enjoy the occasional pun.

When entering the Prison map for the first time, pay attention to the name plaque above the door that reads "N.E. More Penitentiary" (Anymore Penitentiary). Although the meaning behind this Easter egg is unclear, it is a fun addition to the game that is bound to make you chuckle when you spot it. Additionally, on the Prison map, in B Block above the cells is the code "B-00", which is readable as 'BOO' and is another smile-worthy inclusion to the game.

7 Bloody Mary, Bloody Mary, Bloody Mary

Bathroom Mirror in Phasmophobia Lit by candles

As a legend of a ghost that still frequents childhood sleepovers, it's a wonderfully nostalgic addition for those playing Phasmophobia to relive some of that youthful fear at the mention of the name 'Bloody Mary'. Although the circumstances for summoning 'Bloody Mary' differ from story to story, there are two things that remain constant: you must say her name three times when looking into a mirror.

In the Phasmophobia game, there are a number of voice recognition phrases that you can speak that will encourage ghost activity, such as 'give us a sign', 'show us', and, most importantly, 'Bloody Mary'. The latter phrase has been proven to affect ghost activity, on some occasions even triggering a ghost hunt. It's certainly a fun addition to the game from the developers at Kinetic Games, evoking a bit of nostalgic fear in the form of an interesting Easter egg.

6 666, The Number Of... The Basketball Hoop?

Basket Ball Hoop 666 Phasma

As a number that has carried a lot of weight in popular culture, originating in the Bible as the number of the beast, 666 has been used widely for its supernatural, devilish connotations. Most recognizable in the Iron Maiden song 'The Number of the Beast', it's no surprise that developers added an Easter egg regarding it to the game.

In the startup area, many players can enjoy playing with the basketball and hoop while waiting for the next game to load in. The score kept above the hoop is a great way to keep count of how many baskets you've made, but therein lies one of the Phasmophobia lobby Easter eggs. When you reach a total of 666 baskets, a loud rumble of thunder appears, giving a great potential jump scare if you're not expecting it.

5 A Message From Beyond The Grave

Message from body under cabin

During the Halloween event, the start-up area of the game was darkened, with a UV light revealing messages left by ghosts all over the room. One specific message, however, contained specific details, stating "I'm under the cabin. Help me."

Following the ghost's instructions, players were quick to load into the Campsite map to follow the clue. When looking underneath the cabin from the side closest to the lake, a body is visible, covered in bloodied cloth, tied up, and ominously left underneath the cabin. Although the Halloween event is now over and the message no longer remains, the body is still underneath the cabin, remaining a fun Easter egg for those who found it during the event as well as those only finding it now.

4 Follow Your Heart

White heart on tank of toilet

Quite a subtle Easter egg can be found on the Maple Lodge Campsite map in the bathroom block. When carefully studying the toilets, you'll be able to notice a faintly drawn white heart in the top right corner of one of the raised water tanks.

This Easter egg makes reference to the very first Saw movie, one of the most well-known horror films of all time. The heart refers to the one that was similarly scrawled on the tank of the toilet in the infamous Saw bathroom. The instructing tape recorder told the victims to "Follow your heart", resulting in the character of Adam searching through the disgusting toilet contents. Luckily, in Phasmophobia you won't have to be reaching into one of those anytime soon.

3 Ominous Blair Witch Symbol

As one of the more obvious yet often missed references in the game, Phasmophobia pays homage to the Blair Witch film series and game. Often hailed as one of the most significant found-footage horror films of all time, The Blair Witch Project takes place in a wooded setting, eerily similar to that of the Maple Lodge Campsite map.

When approaching the fence close to the fire pit on the Campsite map, if you look carefully you are able to see the Blair Witch symbol crafted out of sticks placed on one of the fence poles. The symbol is ominous, usually indicating the presence of the Blair Witch or some nefarious supernatural force. With this in mind, it's a brilliantly fitting Phasmophobia Easter egg, especially as it's included in a wooded map.

2 Jason Returns?

As one of the most recognizable film franchises in the horror industry, Friday The 13th has undoubtedly made its mark on popular culture, inspiring a host of films and even a game (which received a mixed reception). Seeing as the actions of the main antagonist, Jason, revolve around Camp Crystal Lake, it's no surprise that developers paid homage to the franchise with an Easter egg on a Campsite map.

In order to find the Easter egg, you need to make your way to the pier on the Maple Lodge Campsite map and, shortly after standing at the end, bubbles will soon rise from the lake, bringing up with them the iconic hockey mask from the Friday The 13th franchise. As a brilliant reference that all horror fans will instantly recognize, this is certainly one of the best Easter eggs in the game.

1 Slender Man Is Watching

Slenderman in Phasmophobia woods

As one of the rarest Easter eggs to find in the game, this reference was spotted by keen-eyed players and caused a lot of talk surrounding Phasmophobia. The figure of 'Slender Man' has been around since 2012 and is an easily-recognizable figure for any long-time fans of horror games, with his blank face and imposing physical structure.

This Easter egg is arguably the best, seeing as it isn't guaranteed to spawn, meaning that those who manage to spot him are lucky to do so. Players on Reddit have deduced that there is a three-in-one chance that Slender Man will spawn in one of five different locations, creepily watching you from the woods outside the boundaries of the map. Try to find him by walking around the edge of the map and looking into the forest the next time you play on the Campsite map, as Slender Man may be watching from the woods.
