Phil Spencer has confirmed that you won’t necessarily need Facebook Gaming on the Xbox Series X in order to stream.

But you’ll probably find the Facebook Gaming app already pre-installed on the upcoming console.

Mixer is dead. Well, not officially, but it’ll stop offering its services as of July 22. Everyone who was streaming on Mixer is being moved to Facebook Gaming, which is Facebook’s streaming service. Except for Ninja and Shroud, who both took multi-million dollar buyout options so that they retained the freedom to go back to streaming on Twitch if they so chose (and we suspect they will very shortly).

The death of Mixer has left a big question for the Xbox Series X, which was going to have native support for Microsoft’s streaming service. Streaming is a big deal with both the big new consoles coming this holiday season, with both PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X software said to offer streamers an easy way to get their gaming sessions online.

But with no Mixer, what will the Xbox Series X do? This question was posed directly to Xbox head Phil Spencer recently when a Twitter user asked if the Xbox Series X will "incorporate an easy way to stream using other apps like Twitch?"

Although Spencer didn’t mention Twitch by name (likely due to this new partnership between Microsoft and Facebook), he did say, "Yes, we absolutely want to give gamers choice of where to stream from Xbox."

It’s important to note that “choice” doesn’t necessarily mean native support. The Xbox Series X might now come with the Facebook Gaming app built into the software, but those that want to stream on Twitch will have to download a separate Twitch app. This is just one possibility that seems likely, although it’s certainly possible for a Twitch app to come pre-loaded on the new console too.

Stay tuned to see where Xbox heads with their streaming tech.
