Xbox still has no plans to break into the world of VR, according to Phil Spencer. The Xbox chief made the remarks while responding to an audience question at the Wall Street Journal's WSJ Tech Live event (via VGC).

"We’re big believers in that software platform and the devices that will enable that," said Spencer when asked about Xbox and VR. "We’re focused a lot more on the software side of that right now. When I think about immersive worlds and I think about the connection of a player and community, that’s something that’s very high on our investment list."

Spencer's response mirrors comments he made back in 2019 during the height of Xbox Series X speculation. At the time, Spencer said "nobody's asking for VR" on Xbox, adding that the format is too low-volume.

While Spencer applauded Sony, Oculus, and Valve for the work they've done on VR hardware, Spencer affirmed his company would stick to what it's good at.

“I think the devices that are out there now, we stay connected with a lot of the players that are out there," Spencer said. "[With] people building hardware, a lot of that happens on Windows and we experiment and talk to a lot of the partners that are there. I think that the hardware innovation that’s happening is great and it’s an important enabler, [but] right now I’m deciding to stay more in the software side of that enablement. I believe it will scale better in the long run."

In that same broadcast, Spencer also revealed that Xbox wasn't done acquiring new studios to add to the likes of Bethesda and Double Fine. “We’re always out there looking for people who we think would be a good match and teams that would be a good match with our strategy... we're definitely not done."
