Phil Spencer has recently justified Xbox's multiple acqusitions over the past few years by claiming that studio acquisitions are "natural and healthy" for the industry.

This news comes from IGN's recent video interview with Phil Spencer who briefly talked about Xbox's activity in the market, aggressively buying up studios to expand its portfolio of first-party studios. In the interview, Spencer talks a little about the controversial aspects of studio acquistions, claiming that he understands why some people may have reservations but ultimately thinks that they are a "natural and healthy" part of the industry:

"I think it's a natural and healthy part of our industry that certain teams will start a studio—many of them will fail, we know most small businesses fail, whether it’s video games or anything else—but those that make it through and at such a kind of risk-filled journey for them, to get to the point to create real value, I’m always going to congratulate when teams get to the point where they realise that value through acquisition or just massive independent success if that’s the path they also start to on,” Spencer explains.

And from what we can gather from the rest of the interview, it seems like more acquisitions are on the way. Spencer goes on to identify some weaknesses in Xbox's first-party lineup, claiming that he'd like to see more family friendly content on the console:

"When I look at the portfolio, I still think there’s an opportunity for us with, I’d say more family friendly content,” says Spencer. “When I think about the geographic diversity of our first-party studios, I think there’s still work for us to do there."

While many will agree with Spencer about studio acquistions, Xbox has been frighteningly aggressive over the past few years, buying up developers like Obsidian Entertainment, Ninja Theory, Playground Games, Double Fine, and most notably Bethesda. Spencer can claim that buying up studios is "healthy" for the industry, but that will do little to silence his critics or ease the worries of PlayStation and Switch owners.
