Two key components of the Star Wars franchise have kept fans around for over 40 years. Visuals and fairy tale science fiction storylines. With the premier of The Last Jedi, the storyline has come under major attack. Whether or not intentional, fandom is divided thanks to a single movie out of dozens of other forms of content. But what about the visual aspect?

The camera angles and visuals in The Last Jedi were stunning and awful at the same time. Yes, we’re referring to General Leia’s Mary Poppins (Harry Potter) like visuals. This has nothing to do with her using the force. The same can be said for Disney’s other two Star War movies too. We can’t forget how stunning the third act of Rogue One was, but the first two acts were lacking. The best visual from The Force Awakens was the scrolling shot of Poe Dameron demolishing enemies aboard his T-70 X-wing starfighter while Finn looked on from the ground. Incorporate in all of George Lucas' movies too, and there's a ton of images that could have been better.

Which is why fans have taken matters into their own hands. Much like they have done over the last four decades. Thanks to deviantart.com, artists have a platform to share their work with the rest of the world. From images of Boba Fett surviving the Sarlacc Pit and Darth Maul’s extracurricular activities — to lightsaber wielding Chiss warriors, these images will blow your mind. Which is why we’ve picked the best-of-the-best regarding pieces of Star Wars fan art that is better than what we got in the movies.

Obi-Wan Kenobi Star Wars

Following the events from Revenge of the Sith, Obi-Wan takes Luke to Tatooine and changes his name to Ben Kenobi. But he didn’t just sit around in the desert for almost two decades waiting for A New Hope. He learned to communicate with Qui-Gon, like Yoda had, while also watching over Luke and his family. In Star Wars Rebels, he meets the young Ezra Bridger and is forced into a rematch duel with Darth Maul. Obi-Wan couldn’t use his lightsaber (except in his duel), as it would give his true identity away. But he still used the force often. Whether it was against Jabba’s men trying to tax water from Luke’s family or getting parts for a speeder Luke wrecked, Old Ben was there for every step of Luke’s childhood.

24 Dreaming Of The Future

Via ganassa deviantart.com

The short beat of Rey eating and pretending to be a pilot in The Force Awakens was imperative. But as this piece of fan art shows, there could have been another similar scene after she pairs up with BB-8. Having the sun set behind Rey as she sits atop her makeshift home would have been stunning. Having a downed Star Destroyer and BB-8 in the background makes it fanservice worthy.

Rey dreaming of a better life was an important part of her character arc.

The image would have also been a way to foreshadow her story. From a dreamer, to the only lightsaber wielding force user in the Resistance — Rey sitting above the wreckage portrays her as the galaxy’s last and only hope.

23 Anime Style Jedi

Via redpear.deviantart.com
Dahri Star Wars

Disney has done a decent job with Star Wars Rebels, giving fans plenty of iconic moments. But let’s be real for a moment, the best moments involved iconic duels. From Darth Vader’s prophetic showdown with Ahsoka Tano to Obi-Wan and Darth Maul, it was all about fanservice. Which leads us to question why Disney hasn’t created an anime style Star Wars series?

Disney has their hand in just about every pot. Why not anime too?

Not that we want Disney to ruin anime. But the potential outcome could blow everyone away, especially if this fan art of a Sith Dahri was part of it. Now that’s fanservice everyone can appreciate.

22 Out Of The Fire

Darth Vader Star Wars

Darth Vader is a money-making machine. Fandom has turned him into the most beloved Sith of all time, and no matter how Disney uses him, it brings delight to audiences and big bucks into their pockets. Which is fine? Keep giving us more Vader, please. He’s too cool not to love. Rogue One gave a brief glimpse of Darth Vader’s palace on Mustafar, but how awesome would it have been to see him walking out of it with flames shooting up all around him as he boards his TIE Advanced fighter. Or even better, getting a glimpse inside his personal fighter which was unlike everyone else’s. Heck, Disney could put Vader next to a bowl of Ramen and fans would still eat it up. Myself included.

21 Dark Side Twi'lek

Via Darek Zabrocki deviantart.com

The Rule of Two created by Darth Bane didn’t go into effect overnight. A Sith cult founded by Darth Krayt on Korriban (an ancient Sith burial world) created a Rule of One. Much like what Sidious would do, Krayt took on many apprentices, but remained the only master.

Darth Talon was a female Twi’lek, Hand to Darth Krayt.

She is covered in Sith tattoos as was the ritual for the Rule of One cult. Each tattoo was earned in combat and applied by Krayt. She was fiercely loyal to Darth Kryat as he was to her too. Talon rose the rank of a full-fledged Sith Lord within Darth Krayt’s order. Eventually, she would become one of two Hands, which is another practice Sidious used that went against the Rule of Two.

Star Wars Darth Maul

Darth Maul is considered canon, but his novel Maul: Lockdown (2015) is not. Written by Joe Schreiber, the book's story takes place a year before the events of Star Wars: The Phantom Menace. The woman in this amazing fan art depiction is Komari Vosa, a former Jedi Padawan swayed to the Dark Side of the force.

Darth Maul and Komari Vosa should have a movie of their own.

Vosa became a crime lord after leaving the Jedi Order and the leader of the Bando Gora cult. Her ruthlessness and terror eventually caught the eye of Darth Sidious, who believed Vosa would upset his long-game plans. Since Sidious considered her a threat, he sent Darth Tyranus to eliminate her. In Maul: Lockdown (Legends) Darth Maul takes sides with Vosa after he determines siding with her fits his own goals.

19 Gone But Not Forgotten

Via anthonyfoti deviantart.com
Mara Jade Star Wars

Once the Hand to the Emperor, Mara Jade is an iconic character who was sadly disposed of when Disney took over Lucasfilm. As Hand, it was her job to eliminate anyone the Emperor assigned to her, without question. Even after his destruction in the Return of the Jedi, Sidious still had a memory bond with Mara Jade. His final orders were simple, eliminate Luke Skywalker. But things turned out much differently thanks to Luke’s gentle and caring nature. After helping Mara be free of Darth Sidious’ hold on her, she marries the man who essentially saved her life — Luke Skywalker. Which is honestly a much better Luke than the one fans got in The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi.

18 Another Day In The Life Of A Scoundrel

Via Kotaku Australia
Star Wars Scoundrels

Much of Han Solo and Leia Organa Solo’s life after their marriage has been erased and thrown into the EU. The fan art by Kotaku is much better than what we got in the movies. How cool would it have been for J.J. Abrams to give a flashback into why Han and Leia were doing their own thing in The Force Awakens, rather than working together like old times. Han and Lando are getting a much-needed beverage while Chewbacca helplessly watches the drama unfold. Leia is obviously upset over something, storming out of a beverage station addition on the Millennium Falcon like a princess would and should. Lando has that look on his face which says, “better you than me, old pal.” While Han looks like, it’s just another day in the life of a scoundrel.

17 Being A Rebel

Via richardhuante deviantart.com
Jyn Erso Star Wars

Much of Jyn Erso’s character made little sense in Rogue One. She was literally betrayed by everyone, from Director Orson Callan Krennic to Saw Gerrera and the Rebel Alliance. Having Jyn continue on with her task, which included sacrificing herself, to get the Death Star plans seems more like convenient writing than actual story telling.

What would Jyn Erso look like working for Darth Vader?

Siding with Vader makes sense. He wanted to take down the Emperor, and he could have given her the revenge she sought over Krennic. Vader would have likely told her anything she wanted to hear if she continued to serve him and do his bidding. This amazing piece of fan art gives fans a glimpse of how Rogue One could have been a much better movie during the first and second act.

16 In The Aftermath

Via Star Wars Concept Art
Star Wars Luke Skywalker

In The Force Awakens, fans were given a glimpse into Kylo Ren’s mind while he talked to Vader’s old mask. But what about Luke? Wouldn’t he have been the first to get the mask before Kylo? Or perhaps Kylo stole it from Luke after he trashed the new Jedi Temple. Either way, this is one scene which should have been in the movies. Why? Because it would have reminded Luke what he was fighting for and against. Yeah, it’s that simple. The story of Star Wars is meant to be like a science fiction fairy tale. And Luke Skywalker was the glue that held the New Republic in place, not the Senate. He loved his father and sought to save him. Even though he never knew Anakin.

15 Chiss Warrior

Via sugarsart deviantart.com
Star Wars Chiss Jedi

The reintroduction of Thrawn into Disney’s canon is all the proof one needs regarding more Chiss in the Star Wars universe. This amazing piece of fan art depicts what a female lightsaber wielding Chiss might look like. And it’s something we want to see. Perhaps Thrawn will survive Star Wars Rebels and return to the Unknown Regions, bringing back his own group of Chiss warriors in the new Star Wars trilogy films.

Having the Chiss return in a future timeline to take over the galaxy would be epic.

We know from Thrawn’s story that the Chiss people are amazing warriors. And if they’re half as sharp mentally as he is, then the galaxy might be in for a bumpy ride. Or, they could simply fight on the good guy's side this time around. Either way, we want to see more Chiss warriors in the future.

14 What Rey Saw

Via littlechmura deviantart.com
Kylo Ren Star Wars

The mental bond created by Snoke between Rey and Kylo Ren in The Last Jedi was one of the better parts of the film. This fan art gives a much better interpretation than what was given in the movie. Kylo’s high pants featured in the film has led to a massive number of memes and jokes. But what if Rey really saw something more akin to this fan art? It would certainly explain her sudden desire to save Kylo from Snoke and the Dark Side.

Let’s be honest, a Reylo story would have been way better than the Canto Bight arc.

Rey obviously has feelings for Kylo, maybe not logical ones, but feelings none-the-less. Since Kylo knew Snoke was behind the force bond, it seems logical that he would try to seduce Rey mentally and physically.

13 Who He Really Was

Via DesignSpartan
Count Dooku Star Wars

Count Dooku, also known as Darth Tyranus (which is a horrible name), was the last of the lost twenty. Dooku was extremely talented as a lightsaber duelist, and he was slightly mad. But the Count Dooku audiences got to see in the movies was a watered-down version of who Darth Tyranus really was.

Born into wealth and power, he reclaimed his title.

Tyranus had three apprentices during his time, Asajj Ventress, Savage Opress, and Quinlan Vos. There’s also General Grievous, but he was never considered an official apprentice. All these characters were powerful and reckless, learning everything they knew from Dooku. But George Lucas gave him the short end of the stick, making Tyranus look foolish and weak. This amazing fan art shows how Tyranus would have turned out if he hadn’t been held back.

12 The Padawan Years

Via valval_deviantart.com
Ahsoka Tano Star Wars

Of all the new characters introduced over the years, Ahsoka Tano reigns as the best. She first appeared in Star Wars: The Clone Wars animated series and was then brought into Star Wars Rebels. She’s even had her own novel written in the new canon. But what fans have never gotten to see, is Ahsoka during her early Youngling and Padawan years. Full of innocence, yet highly intelligent, Ahsoka Tano takes over where Anakin Skywalker fell. Instead of being seduced by the Dark Side, she embraced the grey area in-between. From her form V style of lightsaber fighting to her passionate desire to help others, Ahsoka is a direct representation of the Jedi’s future. But because of the timeline, she was written in, it’s unlikely we’ll see her again unless she gets her own standalone film.

11 Feisty Mandalorian

Via suppa rider deviantart.com
Bo Katan Star Wars

Bo-Katan Kryze was once the leader of the Nite Owls and a lieutenant in Death Watch. Her sister Satine once ruled as the Duchess of Mandalore during The Clone Wars. While her sister was a pacifistic, Bo-Katan is a feisty Mandalorian of action. She is powerful, tactical, and wise — making her a threat worth paying attention too. Fast forward to the Star Wars Rebels timeline and Bo-Katan has joined forces with Clan Wren to eliminate the Imperial presence on Mandalore. Being a natural born leader, Sabine offers her the Dark Saber, believing Bo-Katan is the one who can unite all Mandalorian’s and free them from the Empire’s grasp. How their story ends is unclear as the final season of Star Wars Rebels resumes February 19 on Disney XD.

10 What Really Happened

Star Wars Cloud City

The Empire Strikes Back is still rated as the best Star Wars movie ever, but this fanart shows a behind-the-scenes event which should have made it onto the big screen. George Lucas loves misdirects, but not as much as Rian Johnson. Which is why he made Lando look like a turncoat for a majority of the film. What was left out, however, was the incident in which Darth Vader convinced Lando Calrissian and Lobot to go along with his scheme in the first place. Lando had no love for the Empire as Cloud City was an independent mining operation. He often took in refugees from the war and gave them work. His initial betrayal towards Han was only temporary as he knew he needed to buy himself time to come up with a plan.

9 Criminal With A Heart

Via Wookieepedia - Fandom
Barriss Offee Star Wars

Barriss Offee was a Jedi Padawan featured in Star Wars: The Clone Wars animated series. She was a Mirialan who trained under Jedi Master Luminara Unduli. Barriss, like Ahsoka Tano, was different. She preferred to study, rather than battle, spending her time devouring ancient Jedi texts. In the animated series, Barriss Offee becomes upset over how the Jedi Council is dealing with the Clone Wars. Especially after the Battle of Geonosis. Attempting to stop it, she orchestrates a bombing of the Jedi Temple and lets Ahsoka take the fall. But Barriss isn’t just an evil and cold-blooded force wielder. She has a caring heart as this fan art portrays. Barriss would eventually be convicted of her crimes, but her goal was still achieved. Ahsoka left the Jedi Order, and the public began to view the Jedi in a negative light.

8 Only The Strong Survive

via robert_shane
Star Wars Return of the Jedi

The environment created by Palpatine was one similar to the Rule of One (Sith legends). Only the strong survived. He constantly pitted his apprentices against one another, Darth Vader included. Sidious also enjoyed watching others suffer. He treated the failings of others as amusing, almost like a form of entertainment. But fans didn’t get to see that in the movies. Instead, the original trilogy had him looking and acting much like Snoke did in The Force Awakens. The prequels tapped into his messed-up mind slightly, but Lucas needed to keep it on a PG level. This fan art, which is better than what we got in the movies, depicts a scene of an officer being tortured for his failures. Vader was likely on standby to force choke if necessary.

7 Knights Of The Old Republic

Via maxmade
Darth Revan Star Wars

Darth Revan and the stories associated with the game Knights of the Old Republic are a fan favorite from the Star Wars EU. Revan was a fallen Jedi, who would return to the Jedi Order thanks to memory erasing technology. The tale takes place almost 4000 years before the formation of the Galactic Empire. Darth Malak, the big bad Sith, has unleashed an armada against the Republic. And what ensues is pure storytelling at its best. Disney may bring the Knights of the Old Republic to the big screen with their recent hiring of creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss. Even if they didn’t, fans deserve an updated MMORPG by BioWare, with no involvement from EA.

6 Another Day At The Office

Via liandry_kipepeo.artstation.comprojectsyEQJQ
Boba Fett Star Wars

This awesome piece of Star Wars fan art shows what Boba Fett should have looked like in the movies. Boba Fett was the best bounty hunter within the franchise and still is, even though his survival is considered Legends now. The details in this piece are shocking and slightly realistic. From Yoda’s ears hanging off the back of the bag to two lightsabers latched on the side, this is the real Boba Fett. And let’s not forget C3PO’s arm sticking out.

Is that Luke Skywalker’s missing hand from Empire Strikes Back?

Unless Disney revives fandoms favorite bounty hunter of all time, we’ll likely never know. He’s gotten plenty of coverage in the new comics but talks regarding him being in a film have stalled for the time being.
