Another PS5 pre-order leak has suggested the next-gen console is going to cost gamers a pretty penny at launch.
Last week, Sony finally revealed information about the PS5 – and a lot of it. Its Future of Gaming event featured multiple gameplay trailers, revealing which titles will be available at release alongside a whole bunch more coming to the console in 2021. At the very end of the event, the console's design was shown off, and it was revealed that there will be two versions available.
Once everyone was over the excitement of seeing Miles Morales as Spider-Man, and the anger brought on by the announcement that GTA V will span three generations, they realized something was missing – the price. Time continues to tick away yet neither Sony nor Microsoft has even hinted at what either of their consoles will cost.
The day before last week's PS5 event, some preorder pages went up for the consoles on Amazon in the UK. It had both the PS5 and Xbox One listed at £599.99, more than $750. Amazon has since confirmed that the prices were listed in error. However, a new pre-order opportunity has got fans worried all over again. This time the listing was found on Play-Asia and it's not much cheaper than the erroneous ones posted on Amazon.
It has the PS5 listed at $699.99. This one looks a lot more official too, as it is accompanied by HD photos of the console. If this is truly how much the PS5 will cost at launch, it will be a full $300 more than the PS4 was on day one. However, the PS3 was $599 at launch, and although Sony has admitted that it was a mistake, it's not beyond the realms of possibility for the PS5 to cost $100 more.
The worry on both sides of the fence is, of course, that one company will undercut the other. Hence why neither wants to reveal its price first. If the PS5 will really cost $699 at launch, that will be music to Microsoft's ears. It may even be able to undercut its rival without adjusting Xbox Series X's pricepoint at all. Something has to be revealed soon regardless, as potential release dates could be just four short months away.
