Gotham Knights has been getting a positive response from fans after the first footage of the game was shown during DC FanDome, but many questions still linger about the upcoming title. One of these questions relates to whether you can play the game using just one character – and it looks like that is actually possible.

Gotham Knights allow players to control anyone in the Bat-family including Batgirl, Nightwing, Red Hood, and Robin. The game plays like an action RPG set in an open world as players explore Gotham City with the absence of Batman. Each character will have a unique fighting style and abilities to experiment with. The game can be played solo, but it also features a co-op mode where a second player can drop in and out anytime without affecting the other one.

IGN spoke with Gotham Knight’s creative director Patrick Redding who answered some questions about the game, including being able to play it with only one character. Redding offered a scenario where players have the option to swap out characters or just stick to the same one. “You could go back to the Belfry and say, 'Oh, I've just unlocked the next major piece of the mystery. And I need to go deal with this thing.' And you can decide that this is the perfect opportunity for me to swap out and play somebody else, so we allow you to dip in and out of those characters.” Even if players don’t swap their characters out, the game can be played all the way through without any issues.

The creative director also added, “But we know most players will typically gravitate towards that one hero that really reflects their style. But I think it's always possible for people to kind of sit there and incrementally play everybody if they want it." Based on the fighting styles of characters, players can lean into one particular skill set and stick with it for the entire game. That sounds like a good challenge for anyone willing to have a playthrough with just one character.

Gotham Knights will be released sometime in 2021 for current and next-gen consoles as well as PC.
