Sony is working on cross-generational play between the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 so that none of its gamers feel as if they've been left behind.

We may not have seen it yet, or even know when we will get to see it, but we have certainly heard a lot of rumor about Sony's next-generation console. It hasn't officially been confirmed that it will be called the PlayStation 5, but history would dictate that will be the case.

There is a good mix of rumors and confirmed news from Sony in regard to the PS5. It has been confirmed that the console will have backward compatibility with the PS4, and there are rumors that compatibility could stretch back even further into Sony's past. Sony has also been showing off the incredibly fast loading times the console will boast by comparing them to the loading times of the PS4 Pro.

The latest news to come out of camp Sony is that it is working on cross-generational play between the PS4 and PS5. Sony Interactive Entertainment President Jim Ryan confirmed the news during an interview with CNET. "It won’t be a binary choice about whether you have to be either on PlayStation 4 or next-gen to continue your friendship," Ryan revealed.

Ryan and Sony want the transition between the PS4 and PS5 to be as seamless as possible. Due to the majority of gaming being online in the present day, this is more important than ever before. Gamers who don't make the switch to the new console right away won't want to be left behind, and those who do will still want to play with friends who haven't yet taken the leap. If Sony keeps its promise, this will not be a problem.

We are already extremely excited about the next generation of consoles and in the grand scheme of things, we will know next to nothing about them. Chances are that this will dramatically change in the coming days as more is revealed during E3. As for Sony and its new PlayStation, the future looks bright, and it seems as if they very much have the gamers' best interests in mind when it comes to its new console.
