Remember that old commercial for the Playstation 2, where Sony cheekily pretended that the PlayStation 9 was going to use electronic spores to "tap straight into your adrenal gland" to create some sort of holographic hallucinatory experience? Well, it looks like Sony now has enough confidence that their PlayStation brand will last through the PS9 and beyond, since they've filed trademarks for the Playstation 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10.

The Japanese tradmarks, which were filed by Sony on October 29, don't say anything about Sony hijacking your entire nervous system. Rather, they list the systems as "TV Game Machines," sadly nipping in the bud any theories about console-induced mind control. Maybe that will just be a premium service.

These trademarks also mean that Sony has no plans to change its standard numbering system for the console. This makes sense, because simplicity is easy to understand and for some inexplicable reason no console manufacturer before Sony even considered just numbering their systems in order. It's a lot easier to remember that PS3 was the third PlayStation than it is to remember that the Xbox One is the third Xbox, after all.

Of course, names for game systems are always in flux, as anyone who has followed Nintendo's projects can attest to. All of their systems were known by their codename long before their actual name was announced (though many still would argue that "Revolution" was a better console name than "Wii" ). Sony, however, has no reason to fix what isn't broken, so unless something does break in the coming decades, we'll be counting the upcoming PlayStation consoles with ease.

But whatever the case, we do know for sure Sony has confirmed that they will be releasing the PS5 will be available for purchase during the 2020 holiday season.

Sony does, however, need to slow down its release schedule if it doesn't plan on releasing the PS9 until 2078. Releasing a system earlier than first announced didn't work out well for Sega, after all.
