The PlayStation 6 is coming, but it won’t be here until at least 2027. That’s the good news from Sony’s arguments against the Microsoft/Activision merger, which were just published by the UK’s CMA earlier today.

Both arguments talk a lot about the future and what might happen if the merger were to go through. The 22-page document says Sony "believes strongly that the Transaction will harm competition, industry participants, innovation, and consumers." Microsoft, meanwhile, said that the merger "is fundamentally pro-competitive because it increases competition in a market long dominated by Sony." Microsoft even admitted that Sony’s first-party games "are of better quality."

Ultimately, it'll be the CMA who decides whether this business transaction goes through, but there was one interesting tidbit. Sony's document, which goes on at length about the importance of Call of Duty, said "Microsoft has offered to continue making Activision’s games available on PlayStation only until 2027," adding that five years "is badly adequate time" to find a replacement.

"By the time SIE launched the next generation of its PlayStation console (which is likely to occur around XXX), it would have lost access to Call of Duty and other Activision titles, making it extremely vulnerable to consumer switching and subsequent degradation in its competitiveness," Sony noted.

Sony has an idea when the PS6 will come out, which was redacted by the CMA, but the above statements confirm it'll be until 2027 at least before we get the next generation. That's about on schedule, given the PS4 released in 2013 and the PS3 in 2006, but this generation is proving to be slower than previous ones.

Microsoft has repeatedly stated that it has no plans to remove Call of Duty from PlayStation and has argued that Candy Crush is a far bigger franchise. Sony's counterargument is that it's not competing in the mobile space and is only concerned about consoles. Being one of the biggest franchises in the world, Call of Duty has a lot of influence on console sales. We’ll see if Sony’s argument is convincing when the CMA renders its verdict.
