Bluepoint Games, the developer of the critically acclaimed Demon’s Souls and Shadow of the Colossus remakes, is now officially joining the PlayStation family. Studio’s next game is going to be an original title instead of another take on existing PS classics.

After multiple rumors, PlayStation’s Hermen Hulst has officially confirmed the acquisition of Bluepoint Games and welcomed the studio to the family. Hulst said Bluepoint “will be a huge plus for future PlayStation Studios properties.” Sony and Bluepoint have worked closely together for years, long ago sparking the speculation that the studio will be joining the list of the first-party developers for the company.

The speculation intensified back in June when the Japanese PlayStation Twitter account accidentally revealed a Bluepoint Games acquisition alongside the Housemarque purchase by sharing the wrong image. Since then, it was only a matter of time for Sony to finally drop an official confirmation. Hermen Hulst also dropped a joke on Twitter, saying that “None of you saw this acquisition coming!”

According to Hulst, Bluepoint “has built a name for itself by creating some of the highest-quality remasters and remakes in the industry,” and the team has gradually raised the bar on console-defining visuals and gameplay with each new project. For their part, the president of Bluepoint Games Marco Thrush added that “PlayStation shares a similar culture and vision” and thanked fans for their overwhelming support throughout the years.

The Austin-based developer won’t be working on yet another remake or remaster, as a team of 70 creatives now wants to explore original ideas. Speaking to IGN, Marco Thrush noted the studio is aiming to work on original content going forward, yet it is unclear if the studio’s next game will be a part of an existing IP or something entirely new. “We have that original game development mindset in our hearts, [...] that’s the next step in the evolution for us,” he only said.

The next game from the studio has reportedly been in development since November 2019, but don’t expect to see it soon. Thrush explained that “original development, of course, takes longer, otherwise, you wouldn’t make a good game.” Earlier we learned Bluepoint intends to “push the bounds” in its upcoming project, and with the support of Sony is finally ready to show what it can do.
