Although this probably seemed unnecessary on paper when the console was first coming out, now it is a feature that a lot of gamers appreciate. It's something that lets game developers use their creativity to enhance the players' immersion into the game.

Updated by Madison Lennon on April 7, 2020: We've already acknowledged how neat it is that the PS4 controller has a built-in speaker that can help add to the complete video game immersion. But surprisingly, not many games put out on the PS4 actually use the speaker in a way that is creative or beneficial to the gameplay.

That said, for those who are interested in finding a game that does implement the new audio technology, we've provided a list below and recently updated it with some other selections to help you find a game that fits your interests.

25 Until Dawn

Until Dawn is one of the better interactive cinematic horror games, and it is a PS4 exclusive. The game utilizes the speaker to add to the overall creepy atmosphere of the game.

During many of the quick time sequences, extra noises and ambiance will emit from the speaker to make it feel like you're genuinely stuck in the dark and terrifying gameplay. One reason people love the game is that it makes players feel like they're participating in a horror movie from the comfort of their own home, but the speaker makes everything much scarier.

24 Warframe

Warframe is a great action roleplaying game that lets you play co-op and it is free-to-play. But one of the coolest features of the game is the way it uses the speaker on the controller. The mysterious Lotus will speak with you from the speaker to update you on the mission and provide more updates as the game continues.

It definitely helps with immersion to hear someone communicating with you as if you're the actual character in the game while you're playing, all through your controller.

23 Tomb Raider

The Tomb Raider trilogy on PS4 was revolutionary in many ways. The games have incredible graphics and utilize the Dualshock controller for multiple purposes. Not only do the games allow you to use the touchpad for certain things in the games, but a lot of the communication comes from the controller speaker.

When Lara reads lore and diary updates, they emanate from the speaker, so it feels like she could be in the same room as you, genuinely narrating events from the game.

22 Spelunky

Spelunky - The Protagonist Hunting For Treasure In A Dark Tunnel

Spelunky is a platforming video game, it is an indie game with 2D features that makes use of the speaker. While the speaker usage isn't exactly revolutionary, it does make some fun sounds and chiming.

As the game name suggests, you play as a spelunker that investigates caves for treasures and jewels. You'll also have to rescue damsels in distress, fight off enemies, and keep yourself from falling into traps. The game was very well-received by critics and audiences.

21 Knack

Knack is an intense beat 'em up platform video game that utilizes the speaker to minimal effect. When you retrieve certain items and do certain actions in the game, the Dualshock speaker will make corresponding sounds.

It might not be much but it helps to make you feel more immersed within the game's environment. You'll play as Knack, a humanoid creature composed of relics. Knack will need to help save humankind from the invading goblins. It has been favorably compared to games like Crash Bandicoot.

20 Resogun

19

Although this side-scrolling shoot 'em up didn't use the PS4 controller's speaker in a lot of varying ways, those who had just gotten their hands on the console, as well as the game, were met with a surprise. Just as the players started Resogun, they were met with a robotic voice telling them to "save the last humans!" Because the game launched basically on the same day as the console, very few players were prepared for that message to come out of their controller instead of their TV.

Even though this isn't as creative as the other entries in this list, it was definitely enough to leave an impression, as well as send a few controllers flying due to the jumpscare.

18 Horizon: Zero Dawn

17

It's undeniable that Horizon: Zero Dawn was an amazing game that drew in more people to buy the PS4 due to it being an exclusive title. Offering an enormous map, interesting story, and great quests, the game was fairly immersive on its own. What made it even more immersive were the sound effects coming from the controller that mimicked what Aloy would be hearing, such as the string on her bow tightening as she pulled back an arrow or the sound her Focus makes on activation.

These sounds aren't perfectly incorporated, as for them to be completely immersive you'd have to hold the controller up to your ear, but it worked very well, nonetheless.

16 F1 2017

15

Anyone who has any interest in racing will tell you that behind any great driver is an amazing pit crew. In F1 2017, you always feel like your pit crew has your back because their voices aren't lost behind the sounds of F1 engines screeching and are instead sent through the controller's speaker. This improves the experience immensely, as it both lets you hear your crew better as well as helps immersion by making it feel like you're getting these transmissions directly.

When it comes to improving immersion in racing games, this design choice was definitely the right call, and we can only hope that more games of this genre will follow in its footsteps.

14 Final Fantasy XIV

13

So far, most people who have never played games on a PS4 might think that the speaker serves little purpose other than to play some sounds that fit what's happening in the game as you play it. However, in Final Fantasy XIV, the speaker helps the player keep track of their raid and quest queues.

We all know that in games such as this one queue times can take ridiculously long, so it's not uncommon that some of us would get up and go grab snacks while in a queue. The controller's speaker sends a notification sound whenever there's a match found so that you wouldn't be booted off for being AFK. Sure, it isn't even close to being complex, but it is so handy that it absolutely deserves a spot on this list.

12 The Last Of Us

11

Anyone who has had any interest in video games in the past decade knows of the behemoth of a game and PlayStation exclusive that was The Last of Us. This game was perfect for anyone who likes games that are slow burns, taking their time in building up the world, characters, and atmosphere. The way the PS4 version made it even more immersive is by playing small audio clips through the controller's speaker, like the rattling of the flashlight's batteries when you shake the controller or audio logs that you can find and play.

Although these are small additions to the overall experience, they definitely improved the immersion through subtle means.

10 Grand Theft Auto V

9

One would think that in an enormous sandbox game such as this immersion wouldn't be awfully important to the developers, as their focus would be set on making the gameplay as fun as possible. However, with the release of the PS4 version of Grand Theft Auto V, the speaker on the controller was utilized to improve immersion. The biggest examples of this are the phone calls you receive in-game as well as police radio chatter that you can hear through the controller. This comes to show that even though the game's main focus is dumb fun, it's always the little details that show us that the developer cares.

8 Transistor

7

In Transistor the PS4 controller's speaker was used in a clever, yet simple way that boosted both the immersion as well as an emotional connection to the game. The way this was done is by letting the player hear the voice of their talking sword through the controller's speaker instead of the TV. This made sense, as the main character holds the sword in her hands the entire time, and making it so that the player hears the voice come the controller creates a feeling that you are the one holding the sword.
