PlayStation is apparently hiring a Director of Corporate Development to help the company identify potential acquisition opportunities. This comes in the wake of news that Xbox has been looking for a Manager of Gaming Strategy and Development in order to identify some of its own potential acquisition opportunities. The parent companies of Xbox and PlayStation, Microsoft and Sony, recently attracted attention for purchasing Activision Blizzard and Bungie, respectively.

“Sony Interactive Entertainment seeks a highly qualified Director of Corporate Development,” the job listing reads. “Sony Interactive Entertainment’s Corporate Development Team works closely with Sony Interactive Entertainment’s Management Team and is responsible for identifying inorganic growth opportunities through acquisitions, investments, or joint ventures. The team sources, evaluates, and completes transactions that are aligned with Sony Interactive Entertainment’s strategic priorities and drive significant long-term value for the company.”

In addition to spearheading the process of corporate consolidation, the new hire is apparently going to be overseeing some of the first-party studios at PlayStation. “This is a high profile and exciting role with significant executive exposure,” the job listing notes. Whoever accepts the position will be offered “unique opportunities at the convergence of the global media and technology industries and a chance to influence the evolution of this fast paced sector.”

The duties include working with “senior executives and other internal partners to continuously refine the major strategic themes” at PlayStation, being a “thought leader” within the company, driving “proactive deal sourcing,” and driving the “deal execution process including due diligence, valuation, and approvals.”

The job posting sounds very similar to the one from Xbox. This called on the new hire to "partner closely with the Gaming Leadership Team to identify and evaluate transformative growth opportunities.” The new hire will be "developing and evaluating the business case for content and technology acquisitions.”

This comes only days after the company started searching for a Senior Director for PC Planning and Strategy. The move led many to believe that Sony will be expanding beyond the console market. “The successful candidate will be responsible for the strategy and commercial activity within global channel sales and will deliver a single, optimized PC sales growth and commercial plan to hub and territory teams to implement,” the earlier job listing stated. “Identifying future sectors and partnerships for commercial growth, the plan should support the delivery of the agreed global channel sales critical metrics.”
