One of the most acclaimed indie games out there is yours for the taking on PlayStation Plus. Celeste, developed by Extremely OK Games, is a 2D platformer where you play as Madeline, whose goal is to climb Mount Celeste.
If amazing and challenging gameplay is not enough for you, the story is also a beautiful highlight for this game, so be prepared to what lies ahead. It's no surprise that it was up for plenty of awards, and it was victorious with quite a few of these nominations. A fun fact is that its prototype was made in four days, as part of a game jam.
9 Hollow Knight: Voidheart Edition
If Metroidvanias are more your style, Team Cherry has got you covered with Hollow Knight. Here, you play as a character only known as Knight. There are some beautiful scenarios to explore and many enemies to kill — especially bosses, which can be quite challenging.
There are also many items to collect, which will help you become more powerful and make the challenges ahead easier. It's a good way to prepare yourself for the sequel, Silksong. Keeping with the fun facts, this game was also conceptualized in a game jam.
8 Terraria
For those who enjoy crafting their way into the world, Terraria is a great option. At first, you can spot quite a few similarities with games such as Minecraft. However, the different perspective and the way you go about it makes this game unique in itself.
You create your character and build things in a procedural world created around you, giving you a unique setting to explore, It's perfect for fans of sandbox games, and if that's not enough, you can experience this game in multiplayer as well.
7 Dead Cells
Dead Cells is another Metroidvania available on the PlayStation Plus service that's worth your time. Alongside elements of the genre such as the action and the exploration, it also has procedural levels, keeping the game fresh as you go on your journey to kill the island's king.
Just beware of this game's difficulty, and its permadeath. If you die, your run is ended, and you'll lose all your gear and currency. Dead Cells is an enticing challenge indeed!
6 Towerfall Ascension
For a good time with your friends, look no further. Towerfall Ascension is yet another game jam prototype that came to fruition, and is a platform battle game that can be played by up to four players.
Each player has a limited number of arrows in a vertical arena full of platforms. Your job is to take everyone else out. Arrows don't get destroyed once fired; instead, they get stuck on whatever they hit, allowing players to pick them back up and keep fighting. It's a very unique type of multiplayer title, and highly entertaining.
5 Oddworld: New N' Tasty
It's not very often that a remake shows up in a list of indie titles. A remake of the classic Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee on the original PlayStation, this game offers a very faithful recreation of the legendary platformer.
Your entire species depends on you to succeed at completing challenging puzzles, with your job being to rescue them from slavery. There's some good humor in the story, which not that many games tend to offer. If your PlayStation Plus subscription also covers classic titles, you'll also have access to the original game.
4 Darksiders Genesis
Darksiders Genesis introduces the final horseman, Strife. It offers a different perspective in gameplay to the previous titles in the series, being a top-down adventure rather than the usual over-the-shoulder camera angle.
Though the game lacks a bit of polish and is rather simple, its gameplay loop is extremely fun, along with solid exploration and visuals. You can also have a friend play as War and tag along for the ride, or you can switch between both characters at any time.
3 Bloodstained: Ritual Of The Night
There might something in the fact that indie developers seem to love Metroidvanias, but that is a mystery for another day. Bloodstained offers a beautiful exploration experience, along with many battles on the way. The gameplay is quite reminiscent of Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, which is natural given Bloodstained is produced by Koji Igarashi.
Some battles are optional, and there are plenty of secrets to find. You can also unlock new weapons and abilities as you travel through a platform-based environment, making Miriam as powerful as possible.
2 Observer: System Redux
If all the action didn't catch your attention, then perhaps a bit of a cyberpunk murder mystery will. In Observer you play as Daniel Lazarski, and your job is to solve a murder using your intellect and your augmented cybernetics.
Gameplay is relatively simple and sees you move around, interact with objects, and talk to people. However, it's the story and the psychological horror that are what sell this experience. It's a game that's quite unique in itself, even compared to similar games.
1 SOMA
Keeping with the horror vibes for a bit longer, SOMA takes place in an underwater facility. Your job is to survive the machines that roam throughout the place, dealing with a bit more psychological horror compared to similar games.
For those who like great stories, there's a lot to investigate if you wish to understand everything that's going on. Your key to surviving is to deal with the puzzles you'll find along the way without getting caught by the machines, making your stealth abilities crucial. No pressure!
