PlayStation chief Jim Ryan officially took the wraps off its handheld Project Q during today's PlayStation Showcase. Stuffed with game reveals including Spider-Man 2, the long rumoured Metal Gear Solid Snake Eater remake, and gameplay footage of Assassin's Creed Mirage, the showcase also found some time to show off new PlayStation hardware.

Coming near the end of the showcase, Ryan took a moment to unveil the previously leaked Project Q. Sporting an eight-inch HD screen, the handheld device basically looks like a screen sandwiched between a DualSense. The Project Q handheld device is intended to enable players to remotely stream any game from their PS5. Sony was careful to ensure viewers know that games must be installed on their PS5 in order to play the games on the portable device.

On Twitter, The Game Awards host Geoff Keighley teased more info, saying that the device will play any compatible game installed on the PS5 using Remote Play over WiFi. "With a vibrant 8-inch LCD screen capable of up to 1080p resolution at 60fps, the device delivers crisp visuals and smooth gameplay streamed from your PS5 when you’re away from your TV," Keighley tweeted. In addition, the handheld will have all of the buttons and features of the DualSense such as adaptive triggers and haptic feedback.

Alongside the official reveal of Project Q, Sony also showed off some PlayStation branded earbuds. Only briefly shown not too much is known about them yet but they're wireless earbuds clearly intended to be synced with the PlayStation 5 although it's likely they might also have additional use with other devices. The earbuds were shown to come in a PlayStation branded case much like earbuds from other companies, such as AirPods, come in.

PlayStation promised more details are coming so expect more information in the days, weeks, or months ahead. We'll have more when we get them. The Project Q device is expected to launch sometime later this year.
