Look, we all want a new Banjo game. Nuts and Bolts was a divisive title, to say the least, and a "spiritual successor" can't ever really fill that special place in our hearts that the iconic bear and bear duo hold. But with Playtonic stepping in to quash rumors about a new Banjo game once again, it's time for us to all accept it: the dream is dead.

Playtonic took to Twitter to let people know not to get their hopes up.

There you have it. Playtonic isn't working on a new Banjo in any capacity. They also went on to clarify that they aren't working on a rumored remaster of the original games. As far as we know, the fledgling developer is a strictly "lizard and bat" studio for the time being.

This isn't the first time rumors have swirled around them, of course. Earlier last year, fans hatched a vaguely conspiratorial theory that assured gamers Playtonic was definitely, probably, maybe working on a new Banjo game. Those rumors, obviously, turned out to be patently false.

Playtonic's in an unenviable position, really. Fans expect the studio to either make the thing that made their staff famous, or continue to grind out successors to these two-decade-old games. Otherwise, they're not happy. But Playtonic doesn't really owe anyone anything - Yooka-Laylee was a stellar little game, and I've heard tell that Impossible Lair was also a rousing success.

Honestly, it would be more interesting to see what this talented crew of veteran developers could come up with that wasn't a tribute to an out-of-vogue genre. But that's just us!
