Pokemon Leaf Green was a nice return to the original games and finally gave the often-overlooked Venusaur to serve as the face of it. Well, prepare to have your memories of it ruined as you journey into Garbage Green, which is designed to show you the absolute worst that this game has to offer.

Referred to as a "Trashlocke," this game is meant to test just how good of a trainer you can be. While all the trainers are the same, everything else has been nerfed in extreme ways. You only have access to Pokemon that are generally considered weak. Healing items have been removed, and entering an encounter-heavy area locks you in until all the trainers are defeated. Some of the biggest Pokemon players have given up on winning with garbage, but can you do better?

Generation 5 is a polarizing entry in the Pokemon series, with many touting as many good things as there are bad ones. Even so, it proved to be a successful Gen with a lot of interesting new Pokemon to catch and a pretty solid challenge. Some say this and make Vintage White, which will make you reflect on the past.

Like other Pokemon fan games, this one has been designed with increased difficulty, namely stronger trainers with smarter AI. The defining feature is that even though the game is set in the Generation 5 universe, you only get to catch and encounter Pokemon from the first three Gens. The creator spent a lot of time adjusting the Pokemon's stats, typing, and move-sets to make them fit at home in an increased Gen 5 challenge, opening up way more interesting strategies for you to discover.

If you love the roguelike formula, it's time to fire up that old GBA emulator you haven't used in months. As the name suggests, Pokemon Emerald Rogue by Pokabbie turns the typical game loop into a largely randomized, highly replayable roguelike experience.

Once you've got everything in order and boot up the game, you'll hop out of that nostalgic moving truck, but things are going to look a lot different. Head south and find the Professor, where you'll choose one of three completely random starters. After that, you'll eventually be directed to a world map; this is where the run begins. Good luck, and may RNG be forever on your side.

Pokemon Infinite Fusion by Schrroms was made on RPG Maker XP, built around a simple question: what if you could combine any two Pokemon to make a new one? If you get excited by the idea of trial and error, and making your own little "Franken-mon" until a really cool one is born, this game is a must-try.

The Pokemon Infinite Fusion website offers many different download options, allowing you to play on PC, Mac, Android, and IOS. While the game feels very Kanto-inspired, graphically, it has DS-era aesthetics and a full, Johto-inspired post-game you can explore.

metapod23

Release Date:

May 31, 2009

Art Style:

Gen 3

Source:

Pokemon Ash Gray is a rom hack, which, like many other Pokemon rom hacks, is built around the original release of Pokemon FireRed. The game allows you to control Ash Ketchum and follow the events of the Pokemon anime rather than the ones from the original Gen 1 and Gen 3 games.

Though there are quite a few Pokemon fan games centered around Ash, many consider Ash Gray to be the very best. A lot of hard work went into making it, as well as a few excellent ideas. HMs are replaced with items like rafts and hatchets, and many of the sprites and tiles have been redesigned and improved.

13 Pokemon Creepy Black

Be Haunted By The Dark Side Of Pokemon

Pokemon Creepy Black Running Through Grass

Creator:

Unknown

Release Date:

October 19, 2011

Art Style:

Gen 3

Source:

Link

Pokemon Creepy Black started life as a Creepypasta, which detailed a player's experiences with a haunted gen 1 Pokemon game. Since then, numerous versions of the title have been created, but the best of these fan-made games is undoubtedly the one that's based on Pokemon FireRed.

Many of the elements talked about in the original Creepypasta can be found in the game, and the creator does an excellent job emulating a spooky vibe through both the visuals and the dialogue. In that respect, it's very different from some of the other fan-made Pokemon games that are out there, but it is incredibly enjoyable nonetheless.

11 PokeMMO

Enter The Pokemon World With Other Online Trainers

Pokemon MMO A Bunch Of Trainers Gathered

Creator:

Squirtle

Release Date:

July 25, 2012

Art Style:

Gen 3 & Gen 4

Source:

Link

As the name might suggest, PokeMMO is an online version of Pokemon that allows you to share your Pokemon journey with other players from all over the world. It boasts four different regions, hundreds of Pokemon, and an incredibly helpful and welcoming community that's more than happy to offer tips and advice to new players.

The game has come a long way since it was first released back in 2012, with its developers constantly making improvements. At this point, it's difficult to say which is more impressive: the ridiculous amount of work that has gone into developing the game or the fact that it has existed for almost a decade without Nintendo shutting it down. Either way, it's a must-play for fans of the series.

10 Pokemon Emerald Kaizo

Just In Case Nuzlockes Aren't Hard Enough

Pokemon Emerald Kaizo Showing Champion Team

Creator:

SinisterHoodedFigure

Release Date:

June 19, 2017

Art Style:

Gen 3

Source:

Link

Most of the games on this list will be wholly original, but there's another angle that some fan-game developers chose: simply making the official games more difficult. If that's what you're looking for, Pokemon Emerald Kaizo is for you.

Its PokeCommunity post describes it best: Pokemon Emerald in "super hard mode." The enhancements this ROM hack gives to Pokemon Emerald are pretty straightforward. More Pokemon to catch, a few more boss battles, and most importantly, much, much more difficult AI. It's become infamous in the Pokemon community, especially among Twitch streamers, for being one of the hardest games to Nuzlocke. That AI will willingly pounce on every mistake you make.

9 Pokemon Light Platinum

An Older Game With Some New Flair

Pokemon Light Platinum Trainer Outside A Pokemon Center

Creator:

Wesley FG

Release Date:

October 27, 2008

Art Style:

Gen 3

Source:

Link

This is one of the OGs of the Pokemon community's ROM hack craze, and it still holds up pretty well in the face of the newer fan games popping up and even the official games' new mechanics. Pokemon Light Platinum takes place in the Zhery region, where you have access to Pokemon from Kanto to Unova.

There's nothing particularly special about Pokemon Light Platinum other than it being an original ROM hack done right. The game comes with shiny new tilesets with just the right amount of pop and a tight plot that's just enough to get your attention. It even comes with a decent postgame that brings you to a new region.

8 Pokemon Prism

Go Back To Fewer Pixels For A Much Bigger Playthrough

Pokemon Prism Trainer Near A Campfire

Creators:

RainbowDevs

Release Date:

December 25, 2016

Art Style:

Gen 2

Source:

Link

Pokemon Prism and its prequel, Pokemon Brown, are hacks of pre-GBA games. It might be a bit jarring to make the graphical step back if you're used to newer games, but once you get used to it, you're met with an insane amount of content.

Prism, in particular, gives you access to Pokemon up to Generation 4, a whopping five regions to explore, and two new types in Gas and Sound (three if you count Fairy, which the original ROM did not have). The game's quality was so close to the originals that they received a cease-and-desist order from Nintendo.

7 Pokemon Reborn

Become The Hero That Restores The Pokemon World

Pokemon Reborn Inside A Dungeon-like Area

Creator:

Amethyst

Release Date:

September 29, 2012

Art Style:

Gen 3

Source:

Link

This is one of the most extensive Pokemon Essentials games out there. Pokemon Reborn takes place in the Reborn region, and the plot revolves around you, the player, bringing it back to its glory days after crime and destruction ruined it.

Aside from the interesting story and compelling characters, Pokemon Reborn comes with Pokemon and mechanics updated to Generation 7, a Gym Leader for every type, and the all-new Field Effects, which give battles a nice added twist. Safe to say, there's almost nothing you can't do in this game, and it'll have you hooked for a while.

6 Pokemon Fire Ash

A Much Longer Experience Of Ash's Journey

Pokemon Fire Ash Title Showing Ash

Creator:

Reinhartmax

Release Date:

September 6, 2017

Art Style:

Gen 3

Source:

Link

Many a Pokemon fan has thought about being Ash Ketchum for a day, either because they wanted to replicate their childhood hero or because they wanted to rescind a stupid decision he made. A lot of fan games go that route, but Pokemon Fire Ash is arguably the best to do so.

At the very least, it's the most complete and content-heavy, following Ash's journey up to the Sun and Moon seasons of the anime. It has all the features you'd need, such as Pokemon from Generations 1 to 7, Pikachu following you, battles with Ash's rivals and companions, and special Pokemon forms like Ash-Greninja and Mega Evolutions.

5 Pokemon Radical Red

Updated A Previous Gen With The Most Recent Gen Elements

Pokemon Radical Red Showing Red With Pokemon

Creator:

soupercell

Release Date:

July 13, 2020

Art Style:

Gen 3

Source:

Link

Pokemon Radical Red is another hack that falls under the "difficulty hacks" category of Emerald Kaizo while adding some brand-new features. For ROM hacks, this FireRed hack is the only widely distributed one that has full-on Generation 8 mechanics. This extends from Pokemon to the new abilities (and even a few original ones) to the new moves to the quality-of-life features.

It even has Max Raid Battles that, functionally, are identical to those in Sword and Shield. Of course, the game itself, being a difficulty hack at heart, is still incredibly hard, so prepare your competitive strategies when playing through it.

4 Pokemon Uranium

Play And Train With Mutated Pokemon

Pokemon Uranium Pokemon Battle

Creators:

JV & Twitch

Release Date:

August 6, 2016

Art Style:

Gen 4

Source:

Link

Similar to Pokemon Prism, Pokemon Uranium followed the typical Pokemon blueprint so closely that its creators received DMCA takedown notices from lawyers straight out of Nintendo. That's how close it is to the quality of a real Pokemon if that's what you want.

As alluded to, Pokemon Uranium acts as a de facto new generation of Pokemon, with completely original Fakemon that comprise the new region of Tandor. The game follows the basic Pokemon formula in terms of Fakemon creation and plot but has a nice added wrinkle: the new Nuclear type and new variants of real Pokemon. The official website's been taken down, but you can still check out the Wiki with download links.

3 Pokemon Clover

A Raunchy World With A Lucky Mascot

Pokemon Clover Fighting The Legendary

Creators:

Various

Release Date:

April 10, 2020

Art Style:

Gen 3

Source:

Link

Of course, a disclaimer: this game is infamously crude and politically incorrect, parodying the blatantly offensive tendencies of 4Chan servers. The creators have fortunately toned it down in recent updates, but its crass nature remains. If you don't support such material, that's completely understandable.

Regardless, that hasn't denied Pokemon Clover its popularity as one of the most well-thought-out ROM Hacks ever. If you're willing to look past the excessively dark humor, you're looking at a game packed with content, infinitely creative, and incredibly difficult. All the Fakemon across both of the game's regions are completely original, and the AI is pretty decently close to replicating real competitive strategies.
