In Pokemon, the Ice-type is considered to be one of the worst. Sure, it is incredible offensively, hitting more Pokemon for super-effective damage than any other type. However, it is terrible defensively, with four weaknesses and only one resistance — to itself. On top of that, it's the rarest type, with only 52 Ice-type Pokemon across all generations.

Despite this, there are a lot of trainers representing the Ice-type. In fact, Ice is one of the few typings that has at least one representative in every single generation of Pokemon. So, let's take a look at these glacial masters and see which ones can stand the heat and who will be left as a sad little puddle.

10 Sina

One of the biggest surprises in researching different type masters is how good Dexio is. His Psychic-type team is one of the strongest teams in all of Pokemon. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said for his partner, Sina.

An assistant for Professor Sycamore and part-time superhero, Sina actually battles the player in Pokemon Moon. Unfortunately, her team is incredibly weak, with only two level 15 Pokemon: Glaceon and Delibird. While this gets better in Ultra Moon, since she substitutes a Smoochum for Delibird, it is still a particularly awful team. While Dexio gets a second chance to show his true strength, Sina never gets the opportunity and is therefore relegated to the bottom of this list.

9 Gaeric

Gaeric is the final Warden you meet in Pokemon Legends: Arceus, presiding over the Alabaster Icelands. An ancestor of Wulfric, Gaeric takes care of the noble Pokemon Avalugg, and trains himself by climbing glaciers with his bare hands. This may make Gaeric physically strong, but his Pokemon aren't nearly as strong.

When you first battle him, Gaeric only has a Glalie at level 48 and a Froslass at level 24. Not only is this relatively weak for the final area of the game, but his Pokemon don't even have full movesets. He doesn't get much better when you face him at the Path Of Tenacity, either, even though he eventually adds a Hisuian Avalugg to his team. Gaeric has a great look, but his battling could use some work.

8 Brycen

Brycen is another trainer with a great look, but a forgettable team. A famous actor in the Unova region, Brycen is the Gym Leader in Icirrus City during the events of Black and White. He leaves the gym during Black 2 and White 2 to focus again on acting, which seems appropriate since his team wasn't very good.

Brycen's gym team features only three Pokemon with the Ice typing: Vanillish, Cryogonal, and Beartic. Without a secondary type to back them up, his team is very easy to brute force your way through, especially if you have any physical Fighting-type Pokemon. Even though his team does get more varied in the different World Tournaments, you can use the exact same strategy to win.

7 Zinzolin

It's very strange that Zinzolin from Team Plasma is an Ice-type expert, since he seems to hate the cold in Black and White. Despite this, he stands out from the previous entries because his team utilizes a strategy. It isn't much of one, but it still counts!

Zinzolin's teams always consist of one or two Cryogonal and either Sneasel or Weavile. The Cryogonals' job is to set up Reflect and Light Screen so that his final Pokemon can hit fast and hard with some sense of defense. Unfortunately for him, this strategy can once again be beaten with some super-effective physical moves, especially if that move is Brick Break. So, while Zinzolin's strategy is weak, it's the thought that counts.

6 Pryce

Pryce is often considered one of the weakest Gym Leaders in all of Pokemon. Even though he's the second to last Gym Leader, the levels of Pryce's team range from 27-34 — a good few levels below Jasmine, the Gym Leader before him. Despite this, Pryce is a bit tougher than he looks.

Despite only having three Pokemon, Pryce has decent type coverage defensively. Seel and Dewgong's Water typing prevents super-effective damage dealt by Fire and Steel-type moves, while in support, his Piloswine completely negates the Electric weakness of the previous two. However, this also opens up his whole team to being weak to Grass-type moves. If he just had another Pokemon or two, his team would be a lot more intimidating.

5 Wulfric

Wulfric from Pokemon X and Y is interesting. He has the highest levels of any Gym Leader, ranging from 56-59, but he also has the fewest Pokemon for a final Gym Leader at three. What makes him interesting as an Ice master, though, is his emphasis on bulk.

Wulfric's ace Avalugg is a Defensive behemoth, but has no Special Defense. To combat that, he has a Cryogonal who is essentially the opposite. He supports them both with an Abomasnow that emphasizes Special Attacks and priority. Despite this interesting synergy, Wulfric is still pretty easy to move through, especially if you have a type advantage.

4 Glacia

Glacia is the third Elite Four member you will face on your journey in Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald. She stands out in a region filled with ridiculous outfits, wearing a Victorian-style dress. What makes her most interesting competitively, though, is that she has a similar strategy to Wulfric. This time, it works.

Originally, her team consisted of two Sealeos, two Glalie, and her signature Walrein. Her first four Pokemon would focus on setting up Hail and whittling your team down, only for Walrein to come in at the end and lay waste with moves like Ice Beam, Surf, and Sheer Cold. This strategy remains the same In Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, except with two Froslass instead of the Sealeo. Either way, her team can be very dangerous if you're not ready for it.

3 Candice

Despite being the youngest trainer on this list, Sinnoh's Candice is strategically one of the most sound trainers. Not only does she have multiple typings to try and cover Ice's weaknesses, but she uses the unique abilities given to Ice-types to make her team stronger.

In Diamond and Pearl, Candice uses a team that tries to counter Rock and Steel-types, using a Medicham to her advantage. On top of this, she is constantly setting up Hail with her Snover and Abomasnow. This gets even harder in the remakes, as they now know more moves to combat her weaknesses. However, her teams in Platinum are the most frustrating, because of their emphasis on Snow Cloak to increase evasion in Hail. Candice is clearly a good student, and one who has done her homework.

2 Lorelei

When it comes to Ice-type masters, most Pokemon fans will think of Lorelei — and for good reason. Not only is she the first Elite Four member ever, but her team makes sure that any challengers are ready for the hardest test in all of Pokemon.

Lorelei's team is surprisingly bulky, with the likes of a self-healing Dewgong, Cloyster, and Slowbro — who is especially dangerous in Yellow, having Psychic, Surf, and Amnesia. On top of this, she has a Jynx that is fast, can hit hard, and can even put opponents to sleep with Lovely Kiss. However, her most dangerous Pokemon is her signature Lapras, which will destroy you with Blizzard and Hydro Pump. Lorelei easily set the standard for what it means to be an Ice-type expert, and was only recently bested.

1 Melony

There is a chance that a lot of players have never experienced Melony, because they purchased Sword instead of Shield. Not only are they missing out because she's way more interesting than her son Gordie, but she is also one of the toughest trainers in all of Galar.

Melony starts with Frosmoth, which can be defeated fairly easily. However, this does not prepare you for her follow-up Pokemon: Galarian Darmanitan and Eiscue. The latter has the ability Ice Face, that when broken, makes it an instant sweeper.

Darmanitan goes through a similar thing once it reaches half HP, only it also adds the Fire-type to the mix. Top this all off with a Gigantamax Lapras that can summon Aurora Veil with G-Max Resonance, and you have the first team to combine bulkiness and attack. It's because of this that Melony is the best Ice-type trainer in all of Pokemon.
