Fossils have been a core mechanic in the Pokemon franchise since the first generation, but the way to earn them in each game changes dramatically. Sometimes you're limited to a certain type of fossil per game, while other times you can acquire multiple fossil Pokemon.

In Pokemon Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl, fossils are easy to get if you know where to search for them. However, they're still a rare Pokemon type that most NPCs won't have on their team, so fossil Pokemon are quite unique in the Sinnoh region. Here's how to dig up fossils and resurrect them once you have one in your possession.

How To Get Fossils

Before you can start searching for fossils, you need to travel to Eterna City, which is the town where you'll find the second gym leader. Once there, enter the house in the picture above and speak with the man inside. This man will explain how you can access the Grand Underground, unlocking the feature for your playthrough.

Travel to the Grand Underground and look at the mini-map to find the shiny pieces of light. When you walk up to a wall with one of these shiny pieces, you'll have the option to dig for treasure. The mini-game consists of digging around; however, there's a limit to how many times you can dig before the wall collapses. The crack icon on the top of the screen is what determines how close the wall is to breaking.

There are a plethora of possible treasures you can earn from mining in the Grand Underground. Unfortunately, fossils are relatively rare, so it may take you a while to find one. When you dig up a piece of the fossil, continue digging until you fully uncover it. You only earn the item if there's no stone covering the fossil when the wall collapses. The mini-game also ends if you discover every item hiding behind the rock.

Reviving a fossil is easier than finding one. Travel to Oreburgh City and enter the Museum, as you can see in the picture above. Speak to the Scientist on the right side of the counter, and he'll offer to turn your fossil into a Pokemon.

Accept the request and then exit the Museum. Enter the Museum again and speak to the Scientist. You'll be given your new Pokemon for free.
