If you've been running around the Sinnoh region in Pokemon Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl, there's a chance you've been completely missing the cue to catch a Pokemon with uncharacteristically high stats.

Ever since the third generation of games, every Pokemon you encounter is given its own, randomly generated Individual Value between zero and 31, also known as IV. IV modifies the stats of a Pokemon before it's been trained, setting the baseline potential for how far it can improve when trained up (which is then decided by Effort Values, or EV). IV is a major part of raising a competitive team, with many people hunting high IVs to breed from.

Most of the time, ideal IV is only noticeable once you've actually caught the Pokemon, but in Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, players have noticed something different. As spotted by Blackpox on the Pokeleaks subreddit, and by PokeJungle, if a wild encounter begins with a shot of your character before the wild Pokemon, that allegedly means that Pokemon has at least two perfect IV numbers and you should try and catch it. Perfect IVs can appear at any time in the game but are incredibly rare. Not quite Shiny rare, but enough for you to maybe consider not immediately running from that billionth Geodude in Oreburgh Mine.

While you can catch a perfect IV Pokemon at any point throughout the game, to find your Pokemon's IV you'll need to have beaten the Elite Four and have access to the Judge option on the PC. As mentioned in this IV guide, you're looking for the Judge to say a particular stat is the "Best". If you've missed out on catching a perfect IV Pokemon, there are lots of ways to find them. The best way is through breeding: Pokemon are assigned their IV right from when they are an egg, meaning you can just breed a large number of your desired Pokemon and keep going until you find the one you want.

One big thing to note is that there are certain Pokemon who have their IVs locked to specific values, like the Mew and Jirachi you can acquire in Floaroma Town.
