It turns out that the Japanese version of the Official Pokémon Sword & Shield Guide had a whole bunch of errors in it.

Ever since the very first Pokémon games, the Pokémon Company has always published a companion guide to help players in their journey to become the next Pokémon Champion. Their utility in the days of the internet is questionable, but back in the mid-’90s, these guides were indispensable for learning all of a Pokémon game’s secrets.

These days it’s more out of tradition than anything else, but the Official Pokémon Guide books still sell well enough to keep printing them. Although, the latest version of the guidebook is being criticized in Japan for being riddled with errors, so maybe they won’t be selling for very long.

In the Japanese version of the Official Pokémon Sword & Shield Guide, there are 64 errors ranging from falsehoods over how a Pokémon learns certain moves during breeding to when and how a certain species of Pokémon evolve. All 64 errors are detailed in a PDF file that was posted on the official Japanese Pokémon website.

The Pokémon Company was none too happy with the shoddy workmanship, which apparently managed to get past two companies during the editing stage. The Official Sword & Shield Guide was made by Shusuke Motomiya and One-Up, a collaborative team that previously worked on the Let’s Go, Pikachu & Eevee! guides.

“Thank you for always enjoying the ‘Pokémon’ series,” reads an open letter posted on the Pokémon website. “In ‘Pokémon Sword Shield Official Guide Book Complete Story Strategies + Garal Encyclopedia’ issued by Overlap Co., Ltd. on December 7, 2019, the data and data provided by Pokemon Co., Ltd. at the time of editing work are incorrect. Yes, and it turned out that there were multiple errors based on it.”

Each error and its subsequent correction are detailed in a 16-page PDF file.

Note that these corrections are only for the Japanese version of the game. The English version of the guide does not contain these errors.
