After The Pokémon Direct, We Won't Get Much More Sword & Shield News At E3

E3 Pokemon

A Nintendo Direct was just held that focused on the upcoming Pokémon Sword & Shieldwhich are due to be released in November. The Direct showed off some new Pokémon and introduced some of the characters from the game, as well as detailing some of the features of Pokémon Sword & Shield, like the Dynamax power-up and multiplayer raids.

The Pokémon Direct revealed a lot of new information about Pokémon Sword & Shield, which is making the fans wonder whether any new information will be revealed about the games during Nintendo's upcoming E3 Direct?

Nintendo usually uses its Directs to focus on games outside of the Pokémon franchise, as Pokémon is big enough to warrant its own dedicated promotional events. Indeed, the Pokémon Company has had two separate events to promote upcoming Pokémon products within the past month - the Pokémon Sword & Shield Direct and the recent press conference that discussed the upcoming Pokémon mobile games, like Pokémon Masters and Pokémon Sleep. If there is significant new Pokémon news to be revealed, then there is a chance that it will upstage other Nintendo announcements, which is why Pokémon news is often kept to a minimum during Directs.

The Big News At E3

A few of the prominent players in the industry have revealed some of their upcoming lineups for E3, such as Microsoft confirming that Gears 5 and Halo Infinite will appear during its conference, but Nintendo has kept its lips sealed over what will be shown during its event. There are rumors circulating about an appearance from Animal Crossing and there will almost certainly be a reveal for the next DLC character in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, but an appearance from Pokémon Sword & Shield is less certain.

E3 is the time when a video game developer or publisher has the eyes of the world upon them, so they generally put their best foot forward and promote all of the great things they have in store for the future. 2019 is going to be even more important in this regard, as Sony is skipping E3 for the first time in history, which means that there will be more limelight to spare than usual.

Nintendo doesn't put as much stock in E3 as other companies, as it holds regular Directs that are used to promote upcoming games. The Directs can be held at any time, which means that Nintendo doesn't have to compete with its rivals for headline space, so E3 isn't necessarily the company's biggest priority.

Pokémon Sword & Shield Will Be Playable At E3

Nintendo might not show much of Pokémon Sword & Shield during the E3 Direct, but there is a good chance that the games will appear at the event itself. Pokémon Sword & Shield are due to be released in November, which means that there will likely be a playable build of the game that can be experienced by the attendees at E3.

Treehouse Live Events Will Have More Info

If there is a playable version of Pokémon Sword & Shield available at E3, then there is a good chance that the game will appear during the Treehouse events. Nintendo has three Treehouse: Live events scheduled from June 11-13 and these have been known to feature Pokémon content. At E3 2018, the Treehouse: Live events had lengthy features about the upcoming Pokémon: Let's Go games, which included an appearance from Junichi Masuda, who talked about the development of the games. It's likely that a similar event could be held for Pokémon Sword & Shield, which would show a lot of footage of the game in action, but would probably be light in terms of revealing new features & Pokémon.

The fact that the Pokémon Company has gone out of its way to host two separate Pokémon events just before E3 suggests that Pokémon Sword & Shield won't be a significant part of the event. There might be a brief trailer shown during E3 to remind everyone that the game is coming soon, but any significant reveals would have likely been shown during the recent Direct.

Wait For More Directs And Japanese Media To Get More Sword & Shield Details

The more likely scenario is that new details will be released gradually over the coming months, especially in Japanese gaming publications like CoroCoro. Pokémon Sword & Shield will likely make appearances in future Nintendo Directs and there will probably be another Pokémon-themed Direct closer to the release of the game.

Pokémon Sword & Shield is the first mainline entry in the series to be released on a console and it will be a significant title in the Nintendo Switch's 2019 lineup. The game will likely be promoted for the rest of the year, but Nintendo has learned the hard way about relying too much on a single game for promotion during E3, as the company's stock dropped after it did that with Super Smash Bros. Ultimate in 2018. E3 2019 will give Nintendo a chance to get fans excited for the next twelve months of releases and Pokémon Sword & Shield is just part of what the Nintendo Switch needs in order to maintain its momentum.

Nintendo's E3 Direct will be held on June 11, 2019. Pokémon Sword & Shield come out on November 15th.
