Pokémon fans are riotous over the recently announced cuts to Sword and Shield. The game's next canon installments have drastically downsized the national pokédex, dropping many timeless favorites like Dragonite and Mewtwo. Even long-beloved original starters, Bulbasaur and Squirtle did not make the cut. This rightfully sparked outrage among fans. However, Reddit has grown mutinous with the news of cuts extending to the established repertoire of moves.

A Rallying Cry

The proposal on Reddit calls Game Freak out for undervaluing the thoughts and desires of its fanbase. It claims, the developers are only interested in making tons of profit for minimal effort. It goes on to propose that the writer – and perhaps many other fans – would be willing to wait for a fully optimized and complete rendition of the next main-series installment. Unfortunately, these fan aspirations have no hope of being realized as long as the developers are making money regardless of quality.

This rallying cry from Redditor wadagod is a truly moving notion to summon the abundance of fan outrage into something constructive. However, it was not generally well-received by ravenous gamers looking for their next Pokémon fix.

The Opposition

Despite the widespread outrage over cuts, the call to arms garnered no real visceral response from fellow Redditors. In fact, many took up the opposition. Some deemed it childish to villainize Game Freak for wanting to cut down on the labor of reanimating nine-hundred plus individual and now highly detailed pokémon.

Casual fans have taken the stance that it was too much personal effort to transfer all their previous pokémon over to the newest installment anyways. Many will enjoy the games fresh gameplay and aesthetics all the same.

United We Stand, Divided We Fall

It was a valiant effort to unite Pokémon fans under one giant boycott movement, but the franchise yields such a vast scale of dedication from fans, it would be near impossible to get enough to agree not to buy. From the fans who join in occasionally, to those who've transferred their favorites up from Pokémon Red and Green, regarding them as treasured friends, there are countless ways to enjoy Pokémon, therefore endless ways to sell it.

This drastic shake-up of the classic Pokémon formula begrudges the loyal fan base which brought the franchise the success it boasts today. However, fresh gameplay and supersized new features adhere to a younger and more casual audience that is eager to open their wallets. This, unfortunately, means a boycott movement wouldn't have much success getting off the ground, and less likelihood making a dent in Game Freak's paycheck.
