Up until recently with Generation VIII's Sword & Shield, every main series Pokemon game had a Victory Road — a route containing the region's toughest trainers all battling each other in the hopes of reaching the formidable Elite Four. Alongside these trainers, these deep caves and passages offered an assortment of high-level Pokemon for you to train your team on or to catch and assist you in your final battle against the Elite Four and Champion.

With Victory Road containing the strongest and highest level Pokemon available to you before facing this challenge, it really begs the question of which had the Pokemon most likely to help you on your journey to becoming Champion. Certain generations gave you rare Pokemon only available to you on this route and others contained type-matchups that would aid you with some of the more difficult Elite Four members later on.

8 Generation I (and Remakes)

Kanto Victory Road Pokemon

Pokemon's first generation with Red, Blue, and Yellow and the remakes with FireRed, LeafGreen and Let's Go didn't have a lot to offer before the Elite Four.

If you had a friend available, you would be able to utilize the Graveller and Machoke in order to obtain Golem and Machamp, but you could also find assistance in Golbat, Onix, Venonat, and Marowak. The remakes also worked on this, with additions such as Arbok, Rhyhorn, and even Chansey.

Unfortunately, none of these, with the exception of perhaps Venomoth and Golbat, would be particularly helpful to you against The Elite Four or Champion Lance, so you'd better hope your original team holds up.

7 Generation II (and Remakes)

Pokemon Generation II Victory Road Ursaring, Donphan, Sandslash, Rhyhorn

Pokemon's Gold, Silver, and Crystal, along with the remakes HeartGold and SoulSilver, featured a return to Indigo Plateau but saw Victory Road populated with some new and slightly more helpful additions.

We still see Graveller, Onix, and Golbat (it is a cave in a Pokemon game, after all) but with the additions of Rhydon, Donphan, Sandslash, and Ursaring.

There are definite improvements on Generation I here; The Ground-type's availability, plus some Fighting-types and new Dark-type moves would actually prove more useful in this Elite Four, but there's still no assistance to be found in these caves for Champion Lance, especially with the average level of Pokemon here decreasing from Generation I's 40's to now low level 30's.

6 Generation VII

Mount Lanakila Sun and Moon Pokemon Drampa. Raticate, Sandshrew. Absol, Golbat, Glalie

Pokemon Sun & Moon and later Ultra Sun & Ultra Moon saw a shake-up with Victory Road, instead having Mount Lanikala, which served the same basic function. Some new Pokemon like Alolan Sandshrew and Alolan Vulpix (both are version exclusives, though) were left undiscoverable until this point, along with the new Normal/Dragon-type Drampa (exclusive to Moon and Ultra Moon).

Mount Lanikala really pushed forward Ice-type Pokemon, but overall these only proved helpful against Flying-type user Kahili with all the other members able to easily eradicate them. The only other assistance would come in Drampa, Raticate, and Absol who could definitely prove useful in helping you take on the Ghost-type user, Acerola.

5 Generation VI

Pokemon X and Y Victory Road Druddigon, Shuckle, Hunter, Lickitung, Poliwrath

The Kalos League in Pokemon X & Y really shows how future games modified Victory Road's Pokemon. It had a wide arrange of Pokemon types and some of the highest level wild Pokemon seen in a game's Victory Road, capping at Level 60. Despite having this variety, Kalos didn't happen to give you many Pokemon that would actually assist you at the Elite Four.

A variety of Water-types in Floatzel, Poliwrath, and Lombre could make quick work of Malva's Fire-types, with the Ground- and Fighting-types in Graveller, Gurrdurr, and Poliwrath also lending a hand against Steel-user Wikstrom. You also had a Dragon-type user in Drasna as well as Champion Diantha, so Druddigon and Hydreigon were nothing if not welcome additions here, along with Steel-type Skamory.

However, Kalos is still to date the only Elite Four to have a Water-type user in Siebold, and if you weren't prepared beforehand, there wasn't any Pokemon available to fall back on in Victory Road.

4 Generation IV

Pokemon Sinnoh Victory Road Kadabra, Steelix, Magneton, Azumarill, Gabite

Generation IV's Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum (and hopefully their remakes) have some of the best variety and levels of Pokemon available before the Elite Four, also being the first to add Dragon-types near the end of the game with Gible and Gabite.

With the exception of Psychic-user Lucian, there really is a plethora of Pokemon you can utilize within your team, with Rock/Ground-types Graveller and Rhydon to help you with Aaron's Bugs and Flint's Fire. An abundance of Water-types with Azumarill, Floatzel, Gyrados, and Lapras can also make short work of Flint's Fire-types and Bertha's Ground-types. And, this is not forgetting that all-important Gabite — especially when evolved into Garchomp — to use against Cynthia's own.

3 Generation III (and Remakes)

Pokemon Gen III Victory Road Whisch, Loudred, Lairon, Mawile, Sableye, Golbat

In Generation III's Ruby, Emerald, and Sapphire, along with remakes Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, we saw the first real change in Pokemon types found in caves (well, apart from Golbat and Graveller, that is).

Hoenn gave us variety, especially with the addition of high-level Water Pokemon in Whiscash, Wailmer, and Tentacruel. This really gave you an advantage when taking on the Hoenn Elite Four. You have Fighting-types like Hariyama for Dark-type user Sidney and Champion Steven, who uses Steel- and Rock-types (Rock is also countered with those Water-types mentioned above), Sableye will help you enormously against Ghost-type user Phoebe, and Lairon and Mawile's Steel and Rock-type attacks will easily help you with Ice-type Glacia (as will the aforementioned Fighting-types).

2 Generation V (Black & White)

Black and White Pokemon Victory Road Excadrill, Boldore, Rufflet, Poliwrath, Deino

Black and White introduced some of its greatest Pokemon right at the end, with both Deino and Fraxure only available on Victory Road. Generation V had a fantastic array of Pokemon available for players journeying toward the Unova League, giving them almost exactly what they would need against its members as well as against N and Ghetsis' surprise appearances.

There's truly a Pokemon for everything, with Dark-types Vullaby and Zweilous' evolutions in Mandibuzz and Hydreigon perfect for taking on Shauntal's Ghost-types, Caitlyn's Psychic-types, and later Champion Alder's Bug-Types. Woobat's Flying moves could also make quick work of Fighting leader Marshal, and similarly, Mienfoo evolved into Mienshao could easily take on Grimsley's team of Dark-types, while also proving unbelievably useful against N's and Ghetsis' teams later on. You could also catch and train an Excadrill, with its powerful Ground-type moves.

1 Generation V (Black 2 & White 2)

Black and White II Victory Road Pokemon Altaria, Golurk, Zwellious, Whismicptt, Druddigon, Banette

If you were looking for a team to really stop the Elite Four in their tracks, you had to look no further than the masterpiece that was Generation V's Victory Road in Black 2 & White 2. Unova's Elite Four in Black and White already had some of the greatest Pokemon to date, but with the addition of a grove full of Grass-types and some new faces around the inside and outside of the caves in Druddigon, Altaria, Banette, and Golurk along with a dramatic level increase with Pokemon as high as level 70, you really could form Pokemon's ultimate Elite Four challenger team.

Dark-types Zwelious (and later Hydregion) along with Golurk and Banette could make easy work of Shauntal's Ghost and Caitlyn's Psychic-types. Poliwrath, Gurrdurr, Sawk, and Throh were also fantastic for Dark-type user Grimsley, along with Unfezant and Altaria for Marshal's Fighting-type team. Altaria, along with either the aforementioned Zwelious or Druddigon, could then easily help you round off the fight against Champion Iris's cacophony of Dragon-types, alongside Excarill for her two Rock-types.
